An independent woman is drawn to a handsome naval captain—sent by her controlling father—in this delightful Regency romance.
Ever since her father tried to sell her as a mistress to the highest bidder, Eleanor “Nana” Massie has prized her independence above all else—even if it means living in poverty. But her world changes overnight when Captain Oliver Worthy shows up at her struggling inn. Despite herself, Nana is intrigued by her beguiling gentleman guest . . .
Oliver planned to stay in Plymouth only long enough to report back to Lord Ratliffe—about Nana. But he soon senses that Lord Ratliffe is up to something, and Oliver will do anything to keep this courageous, beautiful woman safe. He’d even go so far as to marry her!

Title: A Worthy Romance!!
Review: Carla Kelly is one of my favorite writers. I have placed her books next to my copy of Jane Eyre! The story of Oliver and Nana certainly meets and excedes my expectations of good fiction. The story itself is realistic for the times and I felt like I was given a real picture of what it was like to live in a port town during the war against Napoleon. I am reminded of Bernard Cornwell's book series, "Sharpes Rifles" or C.S. Forester's character of Horatio Hornblower, only now there is a more satisfying romantic component, at least for me. The characters are consistent with the time period, and true to the social mores of the times. Thanks to the skill of Ms.Kelly, we are able get inside these characters and to feel what they feel and know what they are thinking.I enjoyed a hero who wasn't a duke or a baron, and a heroine who wasn't a princess in disquise. For me, It is the quality of their characters and how they change and grow, that make this a story worth reading.

Title: Marrying the Captain by Carla Kelly
Review: Synopsis: Eleanor "Nana" Massie's father, Lord Ratliffe, recruits Captain Oliver Worthy to spy on Nana at the small inn she runs with her grandmother. As soon as he meets Nana, he realizes Ratliffe is up to no good. What I liked: I am a fan of Carla Kelly. I have read some of her older traditional Regencies and I LOVED them. I liked this one but not quite as much. The characters are likable, the plot is believable and the historical detail is just enough to put you in the time period without making you wonder if you'd purchased a history text by mistake. :o)What I disliked: So there was one love scene in this book I skipped that contained a little more detail than I personally care for. I was disappointed that this scene was even in the book. Carla Kelly writes a wonderful, moving tale without detailed love scenes. I don't know if this was something she was told to do to get this story published or if she honestly felt it was necessary to the plot. (Traditional Regencies do not seem to have quite the following they once had.) The other thing that annoyed me was--and yes, I know this will sound nitpicky--the nickname "Nana" for the heroine. I'm sorry. When I hear Nana, I think grandma. It was distracting at times. My opinion.Overall: 4.4 stars. This is probably a book I'll read again.

Title: The first in the series about 3 sisters
Review: Carla Kelly has set up a rather contrived way to connect the lives of 3 sisters -- they are all illegitimate daughters of a dissolute nobleman. The first of these daughters to find a husband is working at a failing inn with her grandmother at one of Britain's seaports. Nevertheless, one of the captains of a ship that needs a major rehauling before it is seaworthy again decides to stay at this inn, gets sick, and finds himself falling for this daughter. The picture of life at this time is just charming and realistic. Each character comes to life and you really care about what happens to them. Kelly has the magic touch with combining history with people living relatively ordinary times in Regency England. I like that Kelly primarily sticks with non-noble people in her books. She shows how tough life can be, and how women especially had to struggle to make a life for themselves within great social constraints. That said, she writes with both great humanity and humor.

Title: Wake me up when it's over
Review: Meh... not terrible but not excellent. I found Massie the heroine, and the whole story, pretty bland and forgettable. The Hero, Captain Oliver Worthy was a sweetheart, but I felt the plot did not do him justice in this slow-as-molasses story. He is a sea captain who is sick and convalescing at Massie's inn while his ship is being worked on and supplied before sailing on another mission during the Napoleonic Wars. Both characters are sweet and likable but their romance is very bland and kinda boring -- no sexual tension, nor engaging repartee, nor humor here. I always enjoy reading all that leads up to characters falling in love, but in this case the H and h suddenly find themselves in love (?!), but even this climatic realization here was antiseptic and underwhelming. Then the reader is further dragged along into a war spy development thrown in I suspect to keep the reader awake. I think this was contrived to show Massie was capable of some gumption. Pity, expected better from a good author.

Title: Very Sweet Romance..More Realistic for the era
Review: This was an enjoyable read that got better as the story progressed. It is very slow paced, and initially I didn't like it so much. However, after I got into the story and into the characters, I found it a more pleasant read. I think it could have been even better if written with a little more emotion for the hero and heroine. One thing I liked about the book a lot was the development of the relationship without an initial jump into bed immediately. The romance scenes, though not very hot, were probably much more realistic for the time period for which it was written - Even though I love a hot romance scene as much as the next, I am a little tired of reading the novels that have the hero licking the heroine's entire body up and down and giving her 10 orgasms on her first time within 2 days of meeting her. We all love fantasy but it seems like lately they've been playing all the cards on the first hand and not allowing the reader to savor the romance. As I said, especially in the beginning, there were some areas that dragged a little. Had it been written with a little more angst and a little more sensory description so the reader could feel more of the story, and not just see, it would have been great.

Review: A lovely sweet historical romance with great characters and a interesting story line. With some basis on actual people who lived she weaves a plot which spans two countries. The villain is believable, the spy likeable, the heroine sweet yet brave and the setting accurate. A nice way to spend an aternoon
