For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde

Title: Best Classical CD ever!
Review: This is one of the best classical CD's I have ever purchased. It has all the composers you would expect, and a few surprise ones that add flavor to the tone of the CD. Many of the numbers are familiar tunes you didn't realize were classical hits (they're often dramatized for TV shows, ads, and movies) and it was great to finally know what the title of those pieces were! I definatly reccomend this to any one who's a fan of classical music, and if you like a certain composer, you can always look up more of their works-- a lovely variety of one of the best genres in the history of music!

Title: A solid sampler to get one started
Review: As a simple beginning introduction to classical music, this affordable dual CD is a solid sampler.Taking many easy to recognize pieces, the editors have identified where one may have heard them before. Certainly almost all these works have been heard in several famous and well known films.I bought it solely to be able to hear a full orchestration of one of Satie's Gymnopodea's. And needless to say the performance of that particular piece is exceptional here.I have also used this CD and its many selections in my drama classes to provide stimuli for many types of scenes: improvisational and formal alike. It also helps greatly as mood music for rehearsal and preparation. Certainly "Carmina Burana" really makes Shakespeare's "Once More into the Breach" speech from Henry V rock and roll.Is this an end all and be all collection? Absolutely not. But it is a great place to begin.

Title: Relied heavily on reviews for purchase- not dissapointed
Review: I wanted to select a "best of" classical music compilation and read through Amazon's reviews to make my selection. This CD met my needs perfectly. If the songs are edited, I can't tell. Many are familiar but not "cliche". The version of "Canon in D" included is a little too fast for my tastes, and that is my only dissapointment. Transistion from song to song is smooth with the exception of the sleep-inducing "Moonlight Sonata" being immediately followed by the bombastic "March of the Toreadors".The use of human voice (opera) is limited, I feel, to those songs which were originally written to include it. (Ex: Halleluja Chorus).

Title: Good selection of classical music
Review: It is great to have such a comprehensive selection of popular classical music on this 2 disc set. I enjoy being able to hear such good presentations of old favorites and it has been fun getting acquainted with some new ones too.

Title: Not that good.
Review: The only good thing I can say is that it includes about 10 songs I personally love. But I can also say it includes at least 5 songs that are extremely cheesy. The rest of the songs are in the so-so category :)But what I find really dissappointing is the volume leveling, its terrible!Just to mention a few, Monlight Sonata (Beethoven) and Clair De Lune (Debussy) are barely hearable, increasing the volume not only causes white noise but it will break your ears when playing one of the loud songs (like the March Of The Toreadors).

Title: It's ok
Review: I like listening to it, even though some of the pieces have been shortened. The only problem I have with it is that some of the pieces are mislabeled. Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue(Andante) is actually the Finale, and instead of the Finale on the next track it goes to "Morning" from the Peer Gynt Suite. Then instead of "Morning" on the next track you get the Hallujah Chorus, and so on.
