Title: "A vicious appetite visits me each night..."
Review: "The Singles 86>98" by Depeche Mode picks up where "The Singles 81>85" left off. The sound quality and variety on this greatest hits collection are pitch perfect. Depeche Mode were one of the most influential bands (and still are) to emerge from the new wave era. Songwriter Martin Gore really made his stride during the late '80s/early '90s. He composed some of the most beautiful and timeless songs. These tracks have aged incredibly well. Nothing generic or fluffy about these pop gems. Gore also sang on a couple of tracks like the breathtaking, "A Question of Lust" and "Home". Anyone who doesn't think "Home" is insanely gorgeous must be insane themselves. Just saying. The instrumental at the end of "Home" is stunning and the lyrics are so emotional. A highly underrated ballad. Lead singer, David Gahan has an equally talented set of pipes. His voice is perfection on "Condemnation" and "Only When I Lose Myself". There's so many great tracks on this GH collection including the hits, "Enjoy The Silence" (the best song of the '80s), "Policy Of Truth", "World In My Eyes" (so sexy), and "Personal Jesus". Every song feels deeply personal like "Stripped" and "Never Let Me Down Again". Everything from the music, to the lyrics, to the production is absolutely phenomenal. And Depeche Mode weren't afraid to take risks. They experimented with grunge, "I Feel You", electronica, "It's No Good", and alternative, "Barrel of A Gun". The results were stellar. I think "Little 15" and "Behind The Wheel" are my favorite tracks. The piano/string arrangement is unbelievable on "Little 15". "Behind The Wheel" is so tantalizing and hypnotic. I highly recommend this amazing collection. This type of music has substance but style as well. Good music, plain and simple. Buy this today. Enjoy!

Title: A Mode of depth, style and maturity
Review: A fine collection of songs that excellently represents the variation and inventiveness in mood, melody & style of the period I rate as the band's most interesting. Gahan's voice meshes perfectly with the music and delivers believable emotions, conveying the power of Gore's edgy lyrics in a convincing manner. On first listen to DM, I found that the jadedness & knowing decadence in tone and subject matter had to slowly grow on me, so the feat here of creating challenging and evocative songs in a 12 year span without falling into self-parody or boring repetition is a particularly great achievement. Listen from start to end and notice that they haven't dated - no two tracks come over the same as you hear the band taking risks with its sound as Gore's ideas subtlely mature, retaining their power without resorting to the usual synth/rock cliches. As a result, the material on this double CD still sounds fresh and challenging today. At their start, it took me a long while to ever like this group, purely because in the very early years their cheesy 'plink, plink' early synth sound to me was aurally a complete turn off. I thus dismissed them as a passing fad/no substance lightweight synth act with little future, so fully avoided them. Then years later I heard 'Violator', which made me realize how far they had grown lyrically and melodically while I was away. I now hear this band as if for the first time & recognize the greatness, variety and depth of what they've done. This is them at their absolute best - unique, compelling, melodic & powerful, with moods that take you to places that you don't always want to go. First rate...

Title: The Best of a Long-Lasting Super Group
Review: The best of the best are included on these CDs. Songs I had long forgotten were a welcome memory flowing back to me as I listened. There are a couple "live" numbers on here, both well recorded. It's easy to feel the enthusiasm and love as the audience takes over singing, "Everything counts in large amounts." The studio version of this song is included on the other CD.I love this set and am really glad I bought it. Some songs were new to me, but all are good. I forgot what an excellent band Depeche Mode was/is once it was really up and running. These are the best years of their career.

Title: Depeche Mode rules!
Review: Depeche Mode is likely one of the most underrated and yet most inspirational bands today. Everyone has heard at least one song by them, or a cover of one of their songs, and yet no one seems to know who they are. These two CD's contain more of their organic and deep, dark sounds as apposed to their poppy (but still very good) electro-dance sound from the early 80's. If you don't know the band that well and just want to hear their hits, this is the CD for you.
