Title: "Blowing the Rock"
Review: The recordings of Emmet and the Jades are a part of the early history of rock and roll. The horn players referred to their music as "blowing the rock," hence the name of one of the Jades' instrumental pieces.Emmet Faulk, Sr. was the lead vocalist. The cool cats in green jackets were the Jades.The instrumentalists were talented, creative musicians who performed in the popular style of 50s rock--as front and center as their smooth lead crooner.The group performed at music venues across Louisiana and in nearby states. They recorded in the New Orleans studio of Casimo Matassa at the same time as early recording artists like Fats Domino and Little Richard.When Emmet and the Jades developed a wider following and had a Billboard hit, they were invited to record by Band Stand Records.These recordings capture only some of their music. If only the walls and wooden dance floors of the early southern dance halls could talk about their live performances!The saxophone player shown on the front left of the album cover is Lionel Donald Joseph Hebert. He was a versatile musician who also played clarinet and piano. He performed big band music with local dance orchestras of the era and was a studio musician who backed recording artists in small early recording studios in south Louisiana. Thanks to this compilation, we can still hear Lionel Hebert "blowing the rock." That rock is still rolling today. "Hit the Road" was featured in Season 1, Ep. 5, of the television series Pan Am, "One Coin in a Fountain" which originally aired on ABC in 2011.
