Title: This movie is well worth watching.
Review: The vicious cycle of events had started in Motaba River Valley in Zaire. In July 1967, a deadly virus, which caused deaths of tens of people in the Mercenary Camp, was discovered by the army. The doctor of the camp wanted supplies to treat the patients. However, the army officials preferred bombing the camp in an attempt to erase the evidence of the virus's existence along with the potential carriers of the virus. Although, they developed the antiserum, "the E-1101," from a blood sample taken before the bombing, they kept it as a secret to be able to use the virus as a biological weapon.The virus showed up in a village in the same area again. Colonel Sam Daniels (Dustin Hoffman) was sent to the area to take a close look at the incident without being notified about the previous experience in the area. His superiors did not share the information about the previous incident with him. Actually they hid it. When Colonel Daniels and his team arrived at the place of incident, it was too late; the entire village was exterminated by the virus. When they arrived there, Major Salt (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), who had never been in the field before, could not stand the horrible scene that he saw in the village and took off the helmet of his protective suit in an attempt to vomit. By chance, the virus was not airborne and nothing happened to him at the time. After they took their samples, they burned down the village since there was nothing to be saved there.After Colonel Daniels came back to the United States, he recommended his superior Brigadier General Billy Ford (Morgan Freeman) to inform the public about the incident in Zaire believing that they found a new deadly virus which has a 100% mortality rate. However, instead of doing so, Brigadier General Ford reminded him of another two incidents in which Colonel Daniels previously recommended informing the public but happened to be wrong. So the story was not publicized believing that the virus was contained. Then, Major General Donald McClintock (Donald Sutherland) and Brigadier General Ford conducted their own analysis on the sample which was brought by Colonel Daniels. They found that this was the same virus that they had kept as a secret for thirty years. However, they once again wanted to cover the story up instead of sharing the information with Colonel Daniels at least, if not the general public.However, the unexpected happened and the virus found its way to the United States. The virus was carried by a monkey which was smuggled into the United States from Zaire. Jimbo Scott (Patrick Dempsey) took the monkey to a small town called Cedar Creek and tried to sell it there but he couldn't. So Jimbo drove to San Francisco and released the monkey on the way, and then got on an airplane for Boston. At first, it was not airborne and was spread through direct human contact, such as sharing food, sneezing, coughing. Jimbo got sick on the plane, however, as far as I could observe, no one cared, including himself. In Boston, he got off the plane and met his girlfriend. Then, they both got very sick and died at the hospital. Unfortunately, in a short period of time, the deadly virus mutated and began to spread at an epidemic rate killing people in a matter of hours in Cedar Creek. When the local officials understood that they were unable to treat the disease at the time, the United States Army was ordered to contain it within the town by all means necessary. Then, panic occurred in the town since no one informed the public about what the government was doing and would do to cure the disease and the only announcement made was that there was a curfew. A couple of people attempted to go through the cordon established by the army; however, they were stopped by random shooting.Colonel Daniels was constantly threatened by his superiors in order to prevent him from digging out the truth and to protect the secret of the biological weapon. After a while, Brigadier General Ford brought "the E-1011 antibody" at the hospital in Cedar Creek to see whether it was working for the virus or not. Unfortunately, that antibody did not work for the mutated virus. When Colonel Daniels saw "the E-1011 antibody," he quickly understood that his superiors were well aware of the virus all along and had had the solution to solve the problem before it got worse; however, they had simply chosen to keep it as a secret not to disclose the biological weapon.The officials in the White House thought that they could not eliminate the virus and decided to blow up the town to stop it from spreading further since they realized that it would exterminate the entire nation in a matter of days. Although this decision meant sacrificing the lives of all of the people in the town, Major General McClintock put it as "casualties of war." So the top officials started the countdown for exploding the town.According to Colonel Daniels and his team, the solution was to obtain an antibody from "the host" which carries the virus. Colonel Daniels discovered that the carrier of the virus was the monkey. A woman from Palisades called the center and said that she knew where the monkey was after Colonel Daniels broadcasted the description of the monkey and the phone number of the Center for Disease Control through invading the broadcasting studio of the KAEF-TV, in Santa Rosa, California. Then, Colonel Daniels went there and found the monkey. Eventually, Colonel Daniels and his team developed the antiserum and saved the town in the nick of the time.Note: I do not discuss the scientific flaws in the movie... Hey,remember that this is just a movie!!!

Title: A superbly mounted, unconventional thriller!
Review: When we hear the word "virus," we tend to think of something minute, something in connection to a computer meltdown or the spreading of the common cold among humans. The thought never even crosses our minds that a virus can be more than just the flu: it can possess the ability to spread in various, sometimes undetectable ways, expand at an alarmingly fast rate, and most frightening, it can be as fatal as a gunshot wound.If you must see one science fiction film this year, treat yourself to "Outbreak," a finely-tuned thriller about a virus that is transported to the United States and begins wiping out a small town in California. There's a great deal of various plot factors that the film explores in excruciating detail, while tightening each one with subtly effective suspense. Combined with some very entertaining performances and a director who knows what he's doing, "Outbreak" becomes a powerful thriller.Dustin Hoffman is cast as Sam Daniels, who, as an expert in microorganisms and viruses, works in the army for prevention of spreading diseases. His ex-wife, Robby Keough (Rene Russo), has just moved to Atlanta to work for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Everything is going as normal until Sam is called to duty in Zaire, where a disease is rapidly wiping out a small native town. Along with Major Salt (Cuba Gooding, Jr), and Major Casey Schuler (Kevin Spacey), they make their way down there, only to discover, to their dismay, just how quickly the disease has acted on everyone.And that's not all. A ship carrying wild animals from foreign countries and continents arrives in San Francisco, where a smuggler named Jimbo (Patrick Dempsey) carries an African monkey to a pet store for trade. Unbeknownst to him or anyone else who comes in contact with the host animal, they all begin contracting severe colds which progress into something much worse, a fatal virus that liquefies the inner organs until death occurs.And it's quite disturbing to see how easily spread the virus is, originating in Africa, making its way to the west coast of the United States, and then progressing by human contact, taking more and more lives as it grows rapidly. Jimbo flies to Boston, where a small outbreak soon becomes contained thanks to CDC's efforts. But a much larger outbreak is at work in a small Californian town, and as the virus soon adapts the ability to be contracted by air, the tension begins.The movie is a suspense thriller of the highest rate, a cutting-edge drama with suspense to spare. The drama lies with the unfolding of the human story behind the widespread disease. Families are seen torn apart as stricken members must leave for quarantine. The citizens of the town rebel at the thought of being confined, while the army and those who work diligently to stop the spreading of the bug must deal with the death that surrounds them everyday.The suspense, however, lies with the progression of the disease, and a mystery surrounding the discovery of a secret antiserum. The virus is shown traveling through air in a sneeze at the movies, circulating amongst the crowd; the very thought of these germs is enough to cringe. It makes you think about just how many germs actually do invade your body each day. Sam's discovery of the antiserum to the virus leads to some shocking revelations concerning his superiors, General Billy Ford (Morgan Freeman) and General Donald McClintock (Donald Sutherland), and testament on how far any country will go for biological power.This is also the first movie to come along in a good deal of time that makes you consider the many different situations from your own point of view. It poses many opposing viewpoints: quarantining the town or destroying it, citizens and all, to keep the virus from spreading across the country; introducing a serum you know you have, or keeping it hidden from public view in order that you may have superiority in the advancement of biological weapons (at one point, McClintock refers to the dying patients as "casualties of war"). With this film, you can actually see yourself in the same situations, and given the choices you have, sometimes the decision is not an easy one to make.At just about every turn in the film, a new star pops into view. It's a movie full of star power, but it uses it casually and to its advantage. Dustin Hoffman is in fine form as the well-educated and intuitive Sam, while Rene Russo is as convincing in her performance as Robby. Kevin Spacey is a smash as the comic relief Schuler, sarcastic and witty to the final credits, and Cuba Gooding, Jr. sells us on his determination and stamina as Salt. Morgan Freeman is back in one of his infrequent bad-guy roles, though his good-guy qualities get the better of him. Donald Sutherland is devilishly cunning as McClintock, making him the ultimate despicable character. And, it must be said, that J.T. Walsh gives one of the best performances of his career, as the Chief of Staff who must introduce the idea of eliminating the town to the President's advisory panel.After seeing this film, I'll never sneeze again. It has such a tremendous effect on you, one that forces you to follow its story, and then forces you to think about what you have just seen. It's a drama of surprising proportions. "Outbreak" is like the very virus it portrays: it begins with small twists and turns, and as time goes on, it expands into a very effective film.

Review: Sorti en salles en 1995, ce thriller réalisé par Wolfgang PETERSEN, met en scène la croissance dâun virus, qui se répand à une vitesse dramatique, balayant tout sur son passage. Inspiré fortement par le virus tristement célèbre Ebola, câest une course contre la montre qui est menée, afin de le contrer par tous les moyens et de sauver la population restante, qui tend à diminuer drastiquement au fil des jours. Déjà à cette époque, lâévocation dâune épidémie pouvait faire peur, mais avec le Covid 19 qui est apparu dans notre réalité et les conséquences de la crise sanitaire au niveau mondial, il est en prise directe avec ce que le monde a vécu ces trois dernières années. Ce film fait encore plus froid dans le dos, affichant un réalisme saisissant, notamment en montrant le déclenchement et la phase active dâun virus mortel, pouvant tuer toute personne en quelques heures.Ma critique portera sur lâédition Blu Ray en import allemand. Le disque délivre un très bon rendu, digne du support HD, lâimage est superbe et le piqué est dâune netteté irréprochable, les couleurs sont magnifiques et le contraste se révèle soutenu. Côté son, il y a une version québécoise, ainsi que la vraie version française, toutes deux affichées en Dolby Digital 5.1, tandis que la version originale, avec des sous-titres français, est proposée dans cette même version, mais aussi en Dolby True HD 5.1. Pour ma part, câest cette dernière sélection qui est à privilégier, en raison de son dynamisme et de la clarté des dialogues, dont la justesse des voix originales, reste inégalée.En 1967, le virus Motaba ronge les soldats dâun camp situé au Congo. Peu après lâexamen des soldats par les médecins, le haut commandement de la base militaire décide dâenvoyer une bombe sur le camp, afin de le détruire et dâenrayer lâépidémie.En 1995, une équipe de scientifiques, menée par le Colonel Sam Daniels, médecin militaire, se rend au Zaïre, dans un village où toute la population est décimée par une maladie mortelle. Parallèlement, un singe de la région est importé en Californie et relâché en forêt. Peu de temps après, plusieurs cas de personnes contaminées apparaissent dans la petite ville de Cedar Creek, avant quâun afflux de malades se précipitent à lâhôpital, dans un état très critique. Reconnaissant le virus Motaba dans son Åuvre mortelle, Sam se rend dans la ville afin de stopper sa propagation rapide, mais lâarmée a déjà établi une quarantaine, empêchant toute personne de sortir et prévoit dâutiliser la manière forte, détruire Cedar Creek en balançant une bombe, si la situation continue à empirer.La distribution affiche une pléiade de noms connus : Dustin HOFFMAN incarne le Colonel Sam Daniels, un médecin militaire humain, également virologue, qui se bat pour sauver les rescapés de cette tragédie, inattendu dans ce genre de rôle, il est impeccable et très crédible, prouvant quâil peut tout jouer ; Rene RUSSO interprète une virologue réputée, le Dr Robby Keough, souvent sur la même longueur dâondes que Sam, elle est également son ex-femme, tenace et efficace, elle fait tout afin de sauver un maximum de vies, elle joue juste et sait rendre à lâécran les multiples facettes de son personnage ; Morgan FREEMAN campe le Général Billy Ford avec beaucoup dâaisance, de calme et de sobriété, lâacteur affiche une autorité rassurante, doublée dâune certaine ambiguïté, il est trouble, ce qui convient à son rôle ; Donald SUTHERLAND incarne quant à lui, le Général en chef Donald McClintock, buté jusquâau boutiste et capable de tout pour éradiquer le virus, quitte à détruire une ville entière pour cacher tous ses manquements, il déroule une performance tout simplement glaçante, certes exagérée, mais qui fait mouche, pour démontrer la perte dâhumanité de son personnage ; Kevin SPACEY interpréte le Lieutenant Casey Schuler, virologue, qui essaye dâendiguer la progression du virus, très juste, il est dommage quâon ne le voit pas assez ; Cuba GOODING Jr campe le Major Salt, il vient en aide à Sam afin de stopper le virus et prend des risques, lâacteur est une fois de plus impeccable et aligne un jeu sobre et percutant à la fois ; enfin dans un petit rôle, on retrouve un jeune Patrick DEMPSEY, des années avant quâil ne devienne une star dans le monde entier, à partir de 2005, avec son rôle du Dr Derek Shepherd, quâil incarnera durant 11 ans dans la célèbre série « Greyâs Anatomy ».Dâune efficacité redoutable, le film affiche son propos haut et fort, oui, une épidémie peut surgir à tout moment, il suffit dâun petit incident pour enclencher le pire des drames. La réalité a malheureusement rattrapé la fiction depuis. Alors ce film nâest pas exempt de défauts, tant au niveau des scènes dâaction, notamment en dernière partie, que par le côté caricatural du personnage du Général Donald McClintock prêt à tout, mais il possède également des qualités indéniables : captivant de bout en bout, affichant un suspense grandissant, la réalisation est totalement maitrisée et bénéficie dâun casting de haut vol, au diapason de lâhistoire décrite et ne comporte finalement quâun seul réel tort : le vaccin étant trouvé beaucoup trop rapidement, afin de donner une fin positive. Force est de constater, que 27 ans après son entrée en production, il nâa pas pris une seule ride et vaut plus que jamais par la pertinence de son propos.Un film méconnu, à découvrir ou à revoir dâurgence.
