#1 New York Times Bestseller

The memoir by the doctor who became a beacon of hope for millions through the COVID pandemic, and whose six-decade career in high-level public service put him in the room with seven presidents

“An eventful autobiography [and] a classic American story…Gripping.”—The Washington Post

“One of the most consequential and most prominent [careers] in American medicine in the past fifty years.”—Jerome Groopman, The New Yorker

Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous–and most revered–doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this was only the most recent of the global epidemics in which Dr. Fauci played a major role. His crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises, make him truly an American hero.

His memoir reaches back to his boyhood in Brooklyn, New York, and carries through decades of caring for critically ill patients, navigating the whirlpools of Washington politics, and behind-the-scenes advising and negotiating with seven presidents on key issues from global AIDS relief to infectious disease preparedness at home. ON CALL will be an inspiration for listeners who admire and are grateful to him and for those who want to emulate him in public service. He is the embodiment of “speaking truth to power,” with dignity and results.

Title: Wow! A life well lived. A gift to us all.
Review: This grifted, humble, brilliant man is, and should be, an inspiration to anyone who wishes to practice science for the greater good.Seemingly a regular guy, but truly an American hero. He has been the right guy in the right place for over 50 years. I envy the Georgetown students who will benefit from his next act.Young students, study his words and acts, and listen well. This book describes a remarkable journey of hard work, integrity, courage and empathy that we all would benefit from trying to emulate. The book is remarkably inspiring and a pretty fun read.

Title: Thoroughly enjoyed!
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book! What a brilliant scientist, doctor, and public servant! The fact that Fauci has successfully helped the United States through various deadly viruses and pandemic, under 7 Administrations, is a testament to his brilliance and dedication as a public servant. I enjoyed reading about his upbringing and family history. And, as he chronicled his life experiences as a brilliant scientist, it was simply captivating. This book helps to understand the grueling world that scientists endure to solve health problems that threaten human existence. The chapter on the Covid-19 pandemic was very eye-opening. So much excellence information in that chapter and the reality on how the government made the pandemic a political fiasco amidst lives being lost, coupled with the poor health communication because the various governmental agencies grappled with effective communication/ messaging amidst the struggle to control the spread of the virus. Then, the mis- disinformation that affected communication during the Covid-19 pandemic was definitely a struggle for this brilliant scientist. I am a communication practitioner/journalist by trade, and the social media mis- disinformation definitely drove me nuts, far less a brilliant scientist/public servant working tirelessly to get us out of a global pandemic. I respect and appreciate Dr. Fauci for helping save lives!Although lots of medical terminology you may not understand, this is an excellent book, with actual news events and research studies to support the experiences of this brilliant doctor. I definitely recommend reading this book!I would give this book 10 stars if I could.

Title: I was sad on finishing this book.
Review: I normally don't give books 4 stars, but Tony Fauci really engaged me [with one caveat]. Part of this is his gentle and informative style that kept me going to the end through all the scientific uncertainty, and social-political turmoil. When I got to the end I felt like I'd lost a friend.I'm not a typical lay reader, given that I had a 35-year relationship with the NIH, starting with Fellowships, research grants, and ultimately a permanent position on an NIH grant review panel. And, I've taught beginning virology-molecular biochemistry at the university level. So, Fauci's book hit home. I was surprised that he could be so dispassionate through his career, starting with the AIDS/HIV crisis and ending with COVID. But, that's his character and why he so loved.Unfortunately, Fauci became the undeserved bogey man of the right wing, even though he didn't have that much to do with public health policy. I cannot imagine how he threaded the needle between scientific fact and politically inspired opposition advocating things like hydroxychloroquine. Really? As an insider I would add two criticisms in retrospect. At the very beginning of COVID, the CDC, and Fauci, discouraged the use of masks for the public, saying they weren't necessary and were otherwise needed for medical professionals in COVID clinics. That was confusing and contradictory to the public. In crises we needed to 'think outside the box'. There was a 'work around' to this conundrum. Few thought of it.Back then, hospitals were blindly discarding their N95s on a daily basis. That wasn't necessary, as quick ad hoc studies showed [one at Stanford]. N95s could be readily sterilized by heat and/or uV exposure, thus killing the virus. Saving those countless masks in hospitals could have made them available to the public and saved lives in the public. Even more important, it would have avoided the confusion about the need to mask that extends to this day, 4 years later. Yes masking was crucial. Did anyone understand the ability to recycle N95s at the start? I'm not an epidemiologist, but my wife and I had a supply of N95s in my workshop for dust avoidance, and we continued to use them day after day. We never caught COVID.The other issue was surface spread of COVID. The CDC has finally abandoned its cautions about that [except for extreme circumstances in hospitals]. Yet, at the start, surface cleaning was a huge distraction to the public and agencies. True, some viruses can spread that way. But COVID? Anyone informed about HIV molecular biology should know the improbability of surface spread of COVID: ie does HIV spread on toilet seats? And, the science of the surface detection of the "virus" is an entrenched cottage industry. COVID is a respiratory virus, and a major review in Science magazine in the summer of 2020 soon proved the aerosol spread of COVID.To the extent that Tony Fauci could have had an influence on policy, and if he understood these facts, he should have spoken up. He apparently didn't. I take a way 1 star from a possible 5 because of this. Yet, I know that no one is impermeable to such comments made post hoc. There is no one in biomedicine who deserves more admiration and respect than Tony Fauci. I therefore urge readers, even those not in biomedicine, to read this book and come to understand the amazing journey of Tony Fauci and his family, and the difficulty of the inevitable occurrence of pandemics. If we could all raise our children to follow in Dr Fauci's path, the world would be a better place!
