Title: Roy Acuff, music from his recording sessions, 20 October 1936 through 18 December 1949
Review: This set is out of print and the asking price for a new copy is out of this world. However, I bought mine through the Amazon market for $28.49 in used, like new condition. Both the CDs and the packaging were indistinguishable from a new set for which one would now have to pay over $400.The music on the first two CDs is more folk/southeastern Mountain/bluegrass music than what is now considered to be country music. It is not unlike the music of the Stanley Brothers. As with the Stanley Brothers music, many of these tracks have religious themes though they can't be called hymns. CD3 and 4 contain mostly "conventional" country music though there are a few tracks with that mountain music sound.The audio quality of this set is quite good though there is noticeable light to moderate surface noise on many tracks. While some may call this a defect, I view it as an indication that the producers used discretion when cleaning up these tracks; Noise reduction stopped when it began to degrade the sound of the music. A few tracks do have some degree of over modulation with it being especially bad on CD2 track 5 "Mother's Prayers Guide Me". As noted below, on one or two tracks, the surface noise goes beyond what I'd call moderate. It is quite clear that these tracks came from old 78 RPM recordings rather than masters. However, at the price I paid for this set, it is easy to say that it well worth the priceCD3 track 16 "I Heard A Silver Trumpet" has far more surface noise than any other track in this set. The noise sounds like this track was taken from a 78 RPM with badly damaged grooves. I doubt that the noise could have been removed without utterly destroying the music. Given the sound quality of this track and the fact that it didn't chart, I question its' inclusion here. Surely, a cleaner track could have been used in its' place. Note that this song was remade in stereo in 1968 under the title, "goodbye my love (i heard a silver trumpet)".A few words about CD2 track 8, "Old Age Pension Cheque" which was recorded on July 6, 1939 or about four years after the Social Security law was passed. Roy claims to have viewed this song as comedy rather than a political statement. However, since Roy also claims to have forgot the name of the person from whom he bought the song, it is impossible to state how the composer viewed these lyrics or when they were actually written. The lyrics are clearly anti Social Security but the original intent can't be known for certain. Note that the title of this song, as it appears in the session list is "Old Age Pension Check" and that title is more commonly used than is the UK spelling used in the track listing for this set.Highly recommended to those who enjoy country music as well as the music of the southeastern mountain folk, provided you can get a good used copy at a reasonable price. It is certainly not worth the $400 being asked for a new copy.Those who find any mention of religion to be offensive should avoid this set. Roy Acuff, like the Stanley Brothers, included religious messages in a substantial number of their songs.

Title: Music with TWANG!
Review: Four CDs each with 25 tracks covering 1936 to 1950 for under $25 by one of the greatest musicians we had. Unless you do not like Country Music, it is hard to find fault with this set. These are the original recordings when CW had a twang, years before the Nashville Sound repackaging occurred. This will produce a somewhat different sound than some of the American CDs contain but one that is closer to what this music sounded like while Roy climbed to the top of his profession.I like the original CW sound from this era and understand how it sounds transferred for current audio systems. The audio quality is good throughout, keeping the true sound of the old records without the problems associated with that media. The booklet is will done with a complete Discography and many photographs.The tracks on the four CDs are in sequence allowing us to follow the development and changes in his music. All the standards are here in their original form Great Speckle Bird. Wreck on the Highway, Waiting for the Call to Glory and both versions of Wabash Cannonball. Come along on the Night to Memphis, this CD will not give you the Freight Train Blues!

Title: King of the Hillbillies!
Review: Considering his importance in the history of Country Music it is rather surprising that this is the first significant box set dedicated to Roy Acuff. These are original recordings (1930s-1950) of his hits including "Wabash Cannonball," "Precious Jewel," and "Great Speckled Bird." Also included are some hot string band recordings, which might surprise fans who only remember the older Acuff singing ballads. Acuff's band included some excellent players instrumental in moving Country music from an old time sound (like Charlie Poole) to the style now considered "classic." Other listeners will be surprised by the inclusion of one cut from the "Bang Boys," Acuff's nom de disc for recording risque titles (included here is "Doin It the Old Fashioned Way"). A nice box, good sound, and a needed reissue. Hopefully Bear Family is already preparing a systematic reissue of Acuff, if anyone deserves it, he does.
