One of the game's most admired and respected writers guides you through 62 masterly demonstrations of the basic strategies of winning at chess. Each game provides a classic example of a fundamental problem and its best resolution, described with chess diagrams and Chernev's lively and illuminating notes. The games – by chess greats such as Capablanca, Tarrasch, Fischer, Alekhine, Lasker and Petrosian – are instructive for chess players of all levels. The games turn theory into practice, showing the reader how to attack and manoeuvre to control the board. Chernev runs through the winning strategies, suggests alternative tactics and celebrates the finesse of winning play. This is not only a book of 62 instructive chess games, but also 62 beautiful games to cherish.

Title: Perfect! And Kindle Version IS Algerbraic Notation
Review: Great book from Chernev! Sure, it's 'old' so it may not be as good as a game engine. But it still has many great ideas, explanations, and variations that makes it on par with Bobby Fischer's 60 memorable games and the 1953 Zurich International Chess Tournament. And let's face it, we are still humans and will never think like a computer. For a beginner and 100-1800 elo - still perfect book! Even 1800+ still has interesting ideas and explanations.PS- Kindle version is working great! And IS IN Algebraic notation! So it's even easier to read for beginners (though descriptive notation isn't that hard to read, lol).PSS- I saw one bad review that it looked like a "math book" with all these numbers and letters... umm.. hello!!! That's how one reads and writes chess lol!

Title: amusing and instructive
Review: There are a lot of beautifully played games, with masters and grandmasters fighting it out. Through them all, Chernev's thoughtful and often amusing comments are a delight. There's also a lot of analysis, seeing what alternate lines might have led to. A terrific book!

Title: Accessible Prose and Great Games!
Review: This is a classicâChernev describes sixty-two of the most famous games in chess history with childlike excitement. Although some of the variations he mentions donât hold up against silicon scrutiny, this book is still a treasure trove of ideas. Strongly recommended for players who want to be captivated by the beauty of chess!

Title: These are very instructive games to enrich the chess reader with things that work over the board.
Review: Another powerhouse book of the Russian school of chess excellence. Bobby Fischer had to study most of his higher chess wisdom from Russian chess publication magazines and periodicals. The famous "Shakmatny bulletin" the reason why I am saying this now the Russian are now reviewing their wisdomTo raise the quality of the future of chess . We wouldn't have a Fischer or a Magnus Carlsen.

Title: Real gems for the budding players
Review: A must-read for beginners and alike after the logical chess move by move. Will definitely find time to go through all the games for the second and possibly the third time.

Title: Excellent
Review: This is an excellent book. Don't know why it is so expensive now. Please read if you have not ; you can go through without a board which will help visualization.Highly recommend ! Dont worry about computer evaluation of lines after all we dont have the luxury while playing OTB , all we need is ideas which this book provides .

Review: Partidas muy bonitas y realmente instructivas. Redacción que te atrapa, Chernev escribe con pasión.La única pega es que los análisis a menudo contienen errores u omisiones, sin duda por la falta d contraste con módulo.

Review: Very instructive, at least for club players (around 1400 elo). Surely for higher rated players as well but I can't evaluate for stronger players.

Review: Just such a brilliant book!! Well annotated, easy to follow and the games themselves.....wow!Highly recommended for players, who probably already have some basis of knowledge of the game and for absolutely anyone, chess minded, who just wants to relax and be entertained and inspired! I've played through all the games several times now and I still keep learning from, as well as admiring these past masters, with so many brilliant moves/captures/sacrifices and the sheer beauty of their collective combination play. I have a couple of these types of books, including this one in the older format (I was happy to buy it again, as I wanted the algebraic notation) and they are a great way of getting to know different, sometimes not so well known, masters of the game. Yes, the games aren't modern, but they are wonderful to play through and admire the concepts.Enjoy!
