Title: AMC 60 of Best Day Hikes in Connecticut & Rhode Island!
Review: âAMCâs Best Day Hikes in Connecticut & Rhode Island: 4-Season Guide To 60 of the Best Trails from the Highlands to the Coastâ! So psyched that outdoor-guru & writer Steve Fagin just launched an amazing way to explore glorious southern New England with daytime hikes (meaning packing light & staying local â often easiest & great fun!).Co-authored by Steve Fagin, René Laubach, & Charles W. G. Smith â working with inimitable Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) â Guide shares wonders near yet often unknown. Love that hikes include all 4 seasons. Buy this Book for yourself & as a gift for those who love the outdoors â or soon will! A treasure.

Title: Very similar to previous editions
Review: I have an older black and white Connecticut-only edition of this book. The new edition has color maps, but the overall quality of maps has not really improved. There is no need to upgrade, unless you also want Rhode Island trails.

Title: Unclear Directions
Review: Very detailed descriptions when youâre on the trail, and weâve enjoyed working our way through this book. However, two things I dislike about it: the trailhead âaddressesâ are written in GPS coordinates, which doesnât help when getting there. Maybe itâs necessary in some cases, but frustrating when some trailheads are located in state parks that clearly have a street address. Second thing is that most trail instructions are written using landscape-based descriptive language like âbear slightly left at the rocky outcropping/large hemlock tree where youâll notice that pileated woodpeckers have drilled holes in the barkâ ⦠when he could instead provide clear (and more helpful) instructions like âstay on the blue blazed trail until you meet the blue over orangeâ¦â etc, providing environment-based landmarks and descriptions for additional flare and entertainment value only. I feel like I spend more time looking at the book to make sure we havenât missed a turn, instead of enjoying my surroundings.

Title: Very detailed info
Review: Connecticut-based writer and outdoorsman Steve Fagin has traveled the world in pursuit of hiking and paddling adventures, but he still finds plenty to love about the outdoors in his southern New England home. Over the last few years, Fagin and fellow writers Rene Laubach and Charles W.G. Smith teamed up with the Appalachian Mountain Club to produce a comprehensive guide to hiking trails in Connecticut and Rhode Island. These two states arenât normally thought of as hiking destinations, but this book proves otherwise. Broken into easily digestible sections, the guide starts in the Highlands of western Connecticut and works east to the Rhode Island coast. Along the way, Fagin, Laubach and Smith provide remarkably detailed descriptions of 60 trails, including what sorts of plants and animals you might encounter, interesting geographic features, historical notes, accessibility, and even whether dogs are allowed. Important notes of caution concerning drop-offs, slippery sections, and poison ivy are also included. An at-a-glance summary at the end of each trail chapter provides info on distance, elevation, difficulty rating, and estimated time it takes to complete the hike. Detailed maps show the route and important landmarks, parking areas, elevation, scenic overlooks, and distances. In short, everything you need to know before planning a trip.As if that wasnât enough, each chapter wraps up with interesting facts about the trail and the surrounding area, as well as suggestions on nearby restaurants to check out, local attractions, sites of historic interest, and state parks.Whether youâre looking for a challenging hike or an easy stroll with children, youâll find a trail to fit your needs in this indispensable guide.
