Title: this bit of software could be for you and enable you to eventually help you to play like a pro
Review: If you're new to piano playing or played years ago, get this one. In addition to:If you're sincere about playing the piano or guitar or guitars :-), no matter if you're amateur/novice or professional, this bit of software could be for you and enable you to eventually help you to play like a pro, the easier way!EZ KEYS by: ToontrackEZ Keys should help revolutionize the music business. Why? If you can tap out the melody of a song, you can essentially write beautiful music. Indeed, it's just a matter of time until the major DAW's add this important feature to their software. AlthoughEZ seamlessly integrates and works well within all of the major programs and hardware.Don't just take my word for it, uh Forrest:-) Google it and see what you find. I can tell you now, it's gonna be good!EZ Keys as like having a gifted college music professor sitting beside you everyday as you write and compose your tunes daily, while slowly but surely learning how to write and play. This college music professor is with you everyday while you play, correcting you and helping you to superstardom. or, maybe just stardom. Everyone doesn't want to be a superstar. The beauty of it all is that you don't have to go online to do all this. Learning this way bends the learning curve to shorten the time it takes to become professionally proficient at the keyboard. I love this type of on the job training. Hours go by so quickly...........Lot's of times I start writing and toying around with this program, look up at the clock and two hours have gone by. What seemed like thirty minutes was actually two hours. I love this program. All you have to do is write or play whatever you can mainly create the melody with your right hand, then compile it, then EZ automatically creates the left hand chords for you. If you want to you can also change those first few notes you've chicken pecked out (that's how I do it everyday) and alter them to triad 4ths, 5ths, 6ths, 7ths,... on up to 13ths..... and more. Realistically, rarely do you have to go over 7ths.After that Keys pops up a circle of 4ths and 5ths and let's to toy around with it to see and hear what the neighboring chords look and sound like, then you write some more then compile again, then repeat, then after doing this a dozen or so times, you've got a complete song that sounds way above your current level of play. These compositions actually makes us sound like we really can play the piano:-) And the best thing, it really does sounds good! It doesn't sound amateurish or hokey like those songs we played out of the music books with the finger numbers over and under the notes, telling us which fingers to use when playing a song. Trust me! It don't get no easier kid:-)You can play a shoestring, if you're sincere. ---John Coltrane---

Title: Struck the right chord with me!
Review: Being a middle-aged refugee from abortive childhood piano lessons, I was skeptical that this or any book would meet its stated goals. In fact I had gone through several others that were so technical and tedious that they only served to discourage me from the hope of simply learning to play popular tunes for enjoyment. Thirty-six pages into this one, however, I was playing Silent Night - not just pecking out the melody with one hand, but actually playing in a way that would be potentially satisfying to a social audience. What is more, as an adult learner I found it satisfying to finally understand some of the concepts of chord construction and music theory as they applied to forming tunes I was interested in hearing, rather than just learning by rote as I had as a child. For this I am eternally grateful to the author. All this is accomplished concisely in 141 pages, including an appendix on musical notation. Practical, motivating, enlightening and straight to the point - bravo! This book uses a chord and lead sheet (simplified notation) approach similar to that of Scott Houston's "Play Piano in a Flash", which I had read previously. The latter was certainly valuable for providing encouragement to an adult coming to the piano with little useful (or remembered) prior training. However, I found it long on enthusiasm but a little short on step-by-step advice. After explaining chords in a very simple but effective manner, it urges the reader to plunge into playing his favorite popular music - as soon as you obtain the appropriate lead sheets! Monath's book follows a more structured, comprehensive approach, and actually includes some popular pieces along the way.I would give it six stars, if I could.

Title: Pop piano made easy
Review: While this title is somewhat dated (1984) it represents one of the best pop piano tutorials presently in print. The author clarifies early on the purpose of the book and delivers the rudiments of treble clef plus chord playing styles. As the author properly notes, this book will do nothing toward developing a classical repertoire but will allow the student (assuming the requisite practice) to play numerous pop/jazz standards from fakebooks or sheet music. Authors of this genre tend to avoid music theory like the plague and this book is no exception. By including just a little more information on note/finger selection Mr. Monath could have put the student in a much better position to avoid the often alluded to "bad habits" critics of these books are quick to mention. However, it's still a very good and accesible book that will have the student playing with confidence by the end of Chapter 3.I would also recommend purchasing a book such as "Total Piano" by Terry Burrows. Not only does this book fill in some of the theory/technique missing from "..Play Pop Piano in 10 Lessons..", but it does so along with easy classical pieces and historical information that is entertaining in a much more polished package.

Review: Thank you Norman for writing this book. For people already "years old", who have not studied music theory, it has been a great impulse to understand how chords are formed, the logic behind them, the possible variations of inversions, and how to quickly enjoy playing songs.

Review: Nothing ever going to teach you to be a piano pro in 10 easy lessons, but this book covers a lot of ground in 10 lessons, and I recommend it for beginners and more advanced students. For anyone wanting to get into playing by ear, playing by chord, improvisation there is a lot in this book.

Review: Although we've only just started on this book both me and my husband love it.This book gives the information that allows you to understand the "rules" of music and how the piano and sheet music work. Some of it is stuff you already know if you've payed instruments a bit before - but its an absolute pleasure to have some one pitch it for the beginner perfectly, and just explain things that you otherwise scrabble around trying to puzzle out for yourself. And it has a pleasing 1970s American tone to it as a bonus! My husband is a total beginner on keyboard. And being a natural noodler and improviser rather than someone who wants to follow instructions, this book is perfect for him. He is constantly breaking off to say how much he loves Norman. Gives you the basic information for how to play around with tunes and harmonies and have it sound good. Also learning to read music (to play melodies with the right hand) very, very fast (a matter of days).I played piano as a kid (to grade 2) but strictly from sheet music - and I had literally no idea how the bigger kid at school who was in a band was managing to play along with those Beatles songs and other covers. This book makes me cross that no one ever even told me about the principle of knowing different chords, and playing them for fun alongside a melody-line! Really enjoyable, and really rewarding, fast. This is basic stuff, musically speaking, but in common with millions and millions of people, I had no idea about it. Reading this book is like opening a door to the kind of piano I always wanted to play.If you are a beginner, or if you were as dense as me about "playing along", this book will be a revelation!
