One book. Nine readers. Ten changed lives. New York Times bestselling author Erica Bauermeister’s No Two Persons is “a gloriously original celebration of fiction, and the ways it deepens our lives.”*

That was the beauty of books, wasn’t it? They took you places you didn’t know you needed to go…

Alice has always wanted to be a writer. Her talent is innate, but her stories remain safe and detached, until a devastating event breaks her heart open, and she creates a stunning debut novel. Her words, in turn, find their way to readers, from a teenager hiding her homelessness, to a free diver pushing himself beyond endurance, an artist furious at the world around her, a bookseller in search of love, a widower rent by grief. Each one is drawn into Alice’s novel; each one discovers something different that alters their perspective, and presents new pathways forward for their lives.

Together, their stories reveal how books can affect us in the most beautiful and unexpected of ways―and how we are all more closely connected to one another than we might think.

“With its beautiful parts that add up to a brilliant whole, No Two Persons made my reader’s heart sing.”―*Nina de Gramont, New York Times bestselling author of The Christie Affair

Title: Short stories with a common thread
Review: I didn't realize when I started to read that they were all different stories relating to the same book...I guess I went in blind, just dove right in! All of the stories are engaging and interesting. You really get to know the characters in such a short time. Very enjoyable and an interesting spin on the topic. Great read! I bought for my mother-in-law too.

Title: An Enjoyable Read for Book Lovers
Review: This book is like a love letter to avid readers. It's a collection of short stories with the through line being that they've all read or encountered the same book, "Theo," at a major juncture in their lives.Bauermeister does an excellent job creating dynamic characters for each chapter. Each character has a fully realized life and backstory that led to this dramatic time in their lives. Some books have only one or two dynamic characters with thinly-created secondary characters, but this one does a great job of really making you feel like you've just met someone new in such a short amount of time.Even though each character is going through a difficult experience in their lives, the book doesn't feel too heavy or depressing. It's an interesting concept that most book lovers will enjoy.

Title: I want to read this book again.
Review: I don't think I've ever said that about any book before! So thought-provoking, so beautifully written. I highlighted so many creative descriptions; where I would say that I couldn't remember the words, she writes about the "games of vocabulary hide-and-seek." In describing a confident and free woman she writes about "a woman with her hand on the tiller and no anchor below."It was a little challenging due to the different characters in each chapter, but that's part of the reason I want to read it again. Some characters I related to completely, others not at all, but there was something to learn from each.

Title: A story about a book finding its way to its readers
Review: This is the story of a book finding its way to its readers. Alice is a writer whose debut novel is both stunning and heartbreaking. As her book makes its way throughout the world, it seems to reach the hands of the people who need it most. Among others, these include a homeless teenager, an angry artist, and a lonely bookseller. Each person finds something unique in the story, an idea that helps them to propel them forward in their lives. No Two Persons reminds readers of how words and books draw people together.Several of Bauermeister’s novels center around the theme of community, of gathering and belonging. Two of my favorites are The School of Essential Ingredients and its sequel, The Lost Art of Mixing. Also, her memoir titled House Lessons: Renovating a Life is beautiful.Words I’m remembering: “She spent another nine months polishing the scenes, reading the sentences aloud over and over, changing a comma, a word, to make the music in them true.”

Title: The readers are the stars of this book
Review: The first novel I read about the art of writing was John Irving’s The World According to Garp. One of its most delightful features was Garp’s publisher, who decided which books to accept by trying them out on his cleaning lady.In No Two Persons, Erica Bauermeister takes this idea a step further. She focuses not only on the novel’s writer, but on its readers and how it affects their lives.Alice Wein is an introverted young woman who wants to be a writer but doesn’t know how to begin until a family tragedy plants an idea in her head. Her experience is one familiar to all aspiring writers: the otherworldliness of the creative process, the fragile hope of success, and the despair of rejection. From that comes an interesting series of readers including Lara, who works at home as a literary assistant; Rowan, a handsome movie star with a medical condition that forces him into a new career; Miranda, a junk sculptor; Tyler, whose obsession with diving gives him refuge from a traumatic childhood; and Nola, a high school girl living secretly in a gardener’s shed. Alice’s novel speaks to these and other characters in ways that are unique to them. The readers are the stars. The book is in the margins.Bauermeister writes well. She sketches her characters in breezy strokes in a way that makes what we don’t know about them as interesting as what we do know. Regrettably, she has spoiled her work as John Irving spoiled his, with offensive language and sexual escapades that contribute nothing worthwhile to the narrative. For that reason, I must limit my rating to three stars.

Title: a book to be read slowly
Review: A book to be nurtured, not rushed. The chapters are loosely related backstories. A warm hug of someone understanding life. A graceful walk through the birth and life of a book and its author.

Title: What a find!
Review: I came across this book on social media and I am SO glad I did... I could not put it down nor did I want it to end! Everything about this book is beautiful, from the concept to the writing to the stories themselves. While it has something for everyone, this is truly a special book for those who love to read and who love everything that books have to offer.
