A beached sailboat. A missing man. A distraught woman staggering ashore. There to greet her—Garrison Gage, full-time curmudgeon and part-time private investigator, who quickly finds himself thrust into his familiar role of crusader for the desperate and downtrodden. The woman claims to have no memory, but is she lying?

When a body later washes ashore, the mystery deepens and the stakes ratchet up another notch. Dark money and even darker intentions. Violence both threatened and real. The woman may be at the heart of it all, or merely an innocent interloper who chose the wrong boat at the wrong time. Only Gage can discover the truth.

Title: THE BEST yet!!
Review: I have read each Garrison Gage novel and loved each one, becoming more invested with each story and loving and knowing these recurring characters with a greater understanding and emotion as the experience progressed through each case, each mystery to be solved, each loss and brush with death. And it led to this final story, this exceptional and intriguing tale of a woman whose ship washes ashore and she's discovered aboard with no memory of who she is or how she came to be there. It focuses on one of Gage's greatest weaknesses and best qualities, the need to help the damsel in distress even more than his undeniable compulsion to solve a mystery. This book is a fantastic journey that's completely surprising in it's unfolding facts, so relative to the world we live in today, and the greatest dip into understanding and self-discovery of Gage's emotional journey that has brought him to this place and the woman he can't resist and discovers that he can't let go of despite her mysterious past and all that he doesn't yet know about her. This was absolutely THE BEST book in the series!!! It has the same well crafted story that's thorough and answers all the questions that arise as it progresses in the sometimes swift and sometimes lumbering way that is Gage himself. All the characters that you come to know and love experience change and growth throughout the progression of the series but in believable and realistic ways and this author has a talent for creating exquisite and unique characters and revealing their complexity in subtle and captivating ways through each book in the series. The only downside to reaching this point in the series is that there's nothing else, no opportunity to spend more time with these imaginary friends and those who love and hate them. It's sad to part with them but sharing their stories was a fun, exciting, sometimes nail-biting experience that I'm glad I got to witness!! Excellent series that will have you addicted and wanting more even after you reach the end but I'm sure these characters will linger with you long after the last word on the page, the whisper of their voices reaching out from your memories at odd times like the memories and life lessons learned and shared with old friends will do!

Title: Mystery inside a mystery, seemingly simplistic, standard genre mystery series that delivers
Review: This series has been a puzzle to me. It has the features of dozens of similar series that I have read samples of and could not delete fast enough, mildly simplistic writing, standard plot lines, cliches enough to make one groan but....for some reason the series works. I read more complex and challenging stuff during the day but come evening and I want to relax I find that I am really looking forward to spending time in Garrison Gage's world. I shudder at the term used in England for warm hearted, benevolently charactered, noncomplex mysteries meant to entertain in a relaxing manner, but the term 'cozy' does fit very well in this case. Warm sympathetic characters, non-earth shaking mysteries for them to solve, and the rainy Oregon coast setting make for a superior read for unwinding. I'm on the last book in the series, A Lighthouse for the Lonely Heart, after that, heaven forbid I should start reading Agatha Christie.

Title: A shroud of tattered sails
Review: This book was exceptional, had just the right amount of everything to keep you interested. The Garrison Gage series have all the ingredients that I enjoy, humor, personality, mystery ( just to mention a few) with great characters. Well written and as before since book 1, I look forward to the next Garrison Gage book.

Title: Gage Is An Old Friend By Now
Review: I've read the entire Gage series to this point and he (Carter) just keeps getting better and better (and he started out pretty good). This book is excellent. In Gage, Carter makes him a flawed but quite likable character. He's a loner who is also wonderfully caring and the writing is some of the best over the hundreds of mysteries I've read in the past several years. I'll start the next book in the series tonight and look forward to the new ones now in production.

Title: Another very good Garrison Gage story
Review: Another very good Garrison Gage story. I still like the character, love his wit and sarcasm, but I agree with other reviewers who said that he needs to think of others in regards to the cell phone issue. ***SPOILER ALERT*** I don't like Tatyana. I could never get her voice in my head, and she seems too sharp-edged for Garrison. And her name is not reader friendly. Nit-picky, maybe, but I didn't care for her when she was first introduced, and I still didn't like her when the story ended. Sorry, SWC. But do please keep writing Gage.

Title: Why do I read these books?
Review: I have read the three previous books in this series and after the last one I stated that I was through with the series out of frustration as the story was absurd. So, why did I go ahead and read this one?...not sure. I do know that the author has a wonderful way of capturing the essence of the northern Oregon Coast in its tranquil and somehow mystic qualities that I miss since leaving the state six years ago. The setting is in a town called Barnacle Bluffs but is obviously Lincoln City if you have ever been there. This tale begins when Garrison Gage and Zoe are walking on the beach one day and come across a beached sailboat just as a woman emerges from the boat beaten and battered with no memory of her past or what happened. Days later a mans body washes ashore and the woman is arrested for murder. So what is new here?.....Within the first few pages we are reminded for the thousands time that Gage has a bum knee, hates telephones and has stumbled across another helpless woman that needs to be saved by the good savior himself. Sound familiar? Actually there is a pretty good story here this time that keeps the pages turning but unfortunately ends up in a muddled up mess in the end that is absurd and totally melodramatic. What drives me nuts is the character of our protagonist who is s rude, sarcastic dislikable person who is a know it all and very hard to like. Yet there is something about him that seems to ingratiate himself into the readers mind. So I come back to the question of why I read these books....Not sure but will probably walk away from this one shaking my head and wondering if i will read the next one,,,,I dont know!!!

Review: The Garrison Gage series is so well written one can see the coastline, feel the wind and rain and smell the coffee. Gage’s grumpiness is believable, the characters real enough to be your friends and neighbours. This is a well crafted tale with some very unexpected twists. Highly recommended.

Review: I have much appreciated the balance between character expression, general thoughts, local life evocation, etc, and the hard action phases. All characters are now very 'human', and I do hope to meet them again in a follow-up episode. For once, this episode ends up with a situation which is as close to an 'happy end' as compatible with the story. It has the characteristics of a good detective story, which is to propose to the reader a wealth of attitudes towards life, subtly inbedded into the plot.
