Our prisms are made with K9 optical glass. They are checked for clarity and imperfections during the manufacturing process. Our prisms are hand sanded and polished to our specific size requirements to maintain consistency and quality. Our prisms measure 6” (150mm) by 1.38” (35mm). Our prisms are slightly wider than the competition to make them easier to hold and use.

All of our prisms come in our padded satin lined Amlong Crystal box.

How does a prism create a rainbow?

When light moves from air into the glass of the prism, light refraction occurs. The design of the prism causes the light to change direction. A ray of light is made up of many wavelengths of light. Each wavelength passes through the prism with different resistance than the other light waves. The different wavelengths normally travel together but get dispersed passing through a prism and we can see them separately as a rainbow.

Prisms are not just for science class and fun light experiments either. Both amateur and professional photographers can use prisms to create interesting effects in their pictures. See below for more information on how to make a rainbow and the fractal lens effects you can create with our prism.

Use a white paper or canvas and tack it to a wall across a room from a sunny window or a flashlight if there are no windows available. Make sure the canvas or paper is flat and smooth. Hold your prism in front of the background. Make sure to catch the light from the window. If using a flashlight, hold the prism in your non-dominant hand and the flashlight in your dominant hand. Turn on the flashlight and hold the prism in the light. Continue to twist and turn your prism in the light source until a corner of the triangle falls into the light beam. Light should then refract through the prism and create a rainbow on your background.

Title: Makes a 6” by 6” Rainbow!
Review: I bought this prism in June 2022 to show some young family members how light dispersion works. The prism was flawlessly made and came in a nice gift-quality little box. I was astonished to see that in bright sunlight I could generate a 6” x 6” or larger rainbow pattern of rich saturated colors. Beautiful! I’ve already purchased a second prism as a gift. Buyers who say this prism does not produce colors are not using it correctly. Sunlight is required because artificial light doesn’t contain all of the wavelengths, and LED flashlights produce mostly blue. The location of the spectrum band is dictated by the sun’s position in the sky. Around noon is the only time the colors will appear near your feet; earlier or later you will have to look at the color bands on a nearby wall. In the accompanying photo the color band is about 6 feet away from me and the sun was high in the sky.
