“From Expert to Executive: Mastering the SOPs” of Leading illustrates the importance and power of demystifying, deconstructing, and rebuilding our notions of leadership in a bid to overcome the most pressing crisis facing modern organizations and their members: not enough leaders are actually leading.Written by Ed Tyson, a former Marine-turned-executive-turned-coach, as a fictional case study within a novella, “From Expert to Executive: Mastering the SOPS of Leading” highlights a matrix of interconnected stories of personal and professional struggle, through which a solution is presented: the LeadershipSOPs. Behind the model’s elegantly compact SOPs acronym, lies a mnemonic double entendre, implying both a methodology identifying the approach (developing and leveraging standard operating procedures) and a framework highlighting the work of leading (structuring, operating, and perfecting communities of effort). Too frequently, new and veteran leaders are left to find and travel the road from subject matter expert to executive alone. And, even when we do support them, we often doom our efforts to failure by overloading development programs with training on interpersonal skills and leadership styles (an approach which wrongly assumes these leaders already know how to differentiate their work from the team’s).A far cry from a dry textbook, “From Expert to Executive…” succeeds in depicting real-life leadership scenarios through the eyes of six fictional leaders and one applicant across more than a decade. It is a must-read, delivering tangible guidance to new leaders grappling with their responsibilities, veteran executives searching for scalability and sophistication, and mentors trying to simplify coaching conversations.

Title: A playbook for new leaders
Review: I enjoyed learning about the Leadership SOPs.Too many people become department supervisors or managers because they are the best at the job. The assumption is being the best at the task, means you are the leader of the team. Often the result is a promotion without any training or assistance on accomplishing the new task of being a leader. This book illustrates that disaster can occur when individuals are asked to make that transition from Expert to Executive without support. The Leadership SOP process allows you to understand and experience how to transition from being the best at what you do to being the leader of the community of effort doing what they do.A great read and a baseline for any new leader, or anyone considering a leadership position.

Title: Fantastic Book; Great storytelling to understand key concepts.
Review: The author did a brilliant job of sharing his thoughtful insights through storytelling. Once you get passed the traditional thinking of what are the steps to take and move to truly interpreting the concepts and making them relatable to you, magic happens. Ed as a fun way to bring the points to life. Highly recommend this book to anybody who wants to grow as a leader.. both professionally and personally.

Title: Not my style of learning, but may be beneficial to some
Review: This book uses anecdotal stories to convey lessons. While this may be perfect for the way some people learn, I prefer more direct approaches.

Title: Powerful and relevant guide for technical leaders
Review: A specific and actionable guide to leadership told through a highly relatable tale. We so often tell people they need to improve as leaders but how often do we actually prescribe what actions they should take? From Expert to Executive lays it out. Great read.

Title: More Please
Review: I found the Leadership SOP intriguing in the beginning of the book. As the story progressed I found myself relating to Raj and K at the same time. I have made similar mistakes as these two more recently than I would like to admit. This is a book I will revisit again as the story is not weighed down with terminology and instruction but rather issues helpful structure that would be easily implemented even if the follow through would take some work. This will will be on my suggested reading list for current and future leaders.

Title: Presents a clear path toward effective leadership
Review: This is different than most leadership books as it does not just discuss the theory and provide examples, it puts it into the context of a fictionalized company. The characters are relatable and people all of us have met in our lives. Presenting his leadership theories within the context of the story helped me understand how to apply these principles in my professional life. Mr. Tyson's leadership SOP's approach presents a logical and effective means of getting the most out of an organization. The methods he proposes will help any organization improve their function and become more efficient and effective.
