While the Black Power movement was reshaping America, trailblazing director Gordon Parks made this groundbreaking blockbuster, which helped launch the blaxploitation era and gave the screen a new kind of badder-than-bad action hero in John Shaft (Richard Roundtree, in a career-defining role), a streetwise New York City private eye who is as tough with criminals as he is tender with his lovers. After Shaft is recruited to rescue the kidnapped daughter of a Harlem mob boss (Moses Gunn) from Italian gangsters, he finds himself in the middle of a rapidly escalating uptown vs. downtown turf war. A vivid time capsule of seventies Manhattan in all its gritty glory that has inspired sequels and multimedia reboots galore, the original Shaft is studded with indelible elements—from Roundtree’s sleek leather fashions to the iconic funk and soul score by Isaac Hayes.

Title: Blu ray set is great!
Review: Great presentation as you would expect from Criterion. Film has never looked better. 4K UHD disc and blu rays. Specials on both the blu-rays and the Ultra HD disc. One of the specials is the second film, "Shaft's Big Score". Sadly, it does not include the third film, "Shaft in Africa" which I think is better than the second film."Shaft" (1971) is more than just "blaxplotation". And, the music by Isaac Hayes! Lots of extras. Just wish they had the third film in the set. A lost opportunity.

Title: Shaft
Review: 4K movie reviews:Shaft (4K)Dir. Gordon Parks4/5Shaft is so cool man. You can see where this movie has influenced so many others. The movie is well paced, gritty and gas a good story. It's fun because Shaft does what he says. He says he's gonna get laid and he does. Mulitple times in fact. While I do find this movie to be very much a product of its time it still has a lot of good going for it. Richard Roundtree was perfectly cast as Shaft for one thing. The New York presented here in 1971 is a slimy and gritty one. With Shaft doing what he has to. There of course is a lot of discourse about white and blackness. I will recommend this movie it was a fun time. The 4K was superb as well. Lots of grain but the colors saw through that. I've seen better but this transfer wasn't bad.

Review: RIP Richard Roundtree, July 9, 1942 - October 24, 2023.First my commentary about the movie:I had the good fortune of seeing this movie in a theatre in Bangalore, India in 1974, when I was nine years old. That memorable experience stayed with me for five decades.(American movies typically took 2 or 3 years to make it to theatres in India those days, due to the excruciatingly slow review process by the censor board there.)Roundtree’s iconic performance as the cool, smart and fearless private eye, the brilliant theme music by Isaac Hayes, the deft screenplay, and the creative direction of Gordon Parks, all came together to make Shaft a classic. It would be remiss to refer to "Shaft" as just another “blacksploitation” movie. Despite the obvious masculinity and sexism portrayed in the movie, its cultural impact and historical significance earned it a well deserved spot for preservation by the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. It’s worth noting that author of the novel and of the screenplay, Earnest Tidyman, had decades of experience as a crime reporter in Cleveland and in New York, where he had stints at the Post the Times. These experiences undoubtedly added an authentic quality to his screenplay, which accurately portrayed the historical context and vernacular of the era.The character of Bumpy Jonas was based on Bumpy Johnson, a real life crime boss in Harlem. The illicit trade in Harlem was generally off limits to the Italian mafia (an unwritten policy that was set by Lucky Luciano in the 1930s). Poverty was a serious problem and America was reeling from the race riots of the previous decade. Police were justifiably jittery about a gang war that could trigger if the mafia moved into Harlem. The screenplay weaves together all of these thematic elements, while keeping the story exciting and entertaining. After Shaft, Tidyman went on to win an Oscar for his screenplay of “The French Connection”.Now, my observations about the 2022 4K (UHD) release for audio and videophiles:This 2022 4K (UHD) transfer of Shaft (1971) and the accompanying 1080p blu-ray disc were produced from a recent re-scan of the film.I also own the original 2012 blu-ray. This 2022 4K and 1080p transfers reveal more detail and texture, and well as improves on tonality and colour pop. For example, the textures in Shaft’s and Lt Androzzi’s suits are very clear. However it appears that Criterion cut some corners in creating the 4K transfer:1. The film grain is visible but mostly controlled, and does not distract from the movie for the most part. That said, near the very opening of the film, particularly where Shaft exits the subway, the grain is particularly heavy - which is possibly caused by “optical pull in” during the editing process, where a part of the negative would have been blown up, making the grain more visible. It’s disappointing that Criterian didn’t deal with this aspect properly. (Universal generally does a far better job in their 4K transfers. In “To Kill a Mockingbird” for example, which did use the “optical pull in” technique in some scenes, the grain level had been averaged to make it less distracting.)2. While the shadow detail is good in the first half of the film, for some reason starting around the No Name Bar scene, it seems the gamma curve appears to have been pushed slightly higher, causing more of the darker tones to be compressed towards black, thus losing the shadow detail. This continues to the movie’s end. Both the 4K and accompanying 1080p versions exhibit this issue, which I think is disappointing.(I’ve included screen shots of the scene at the No Name Bar where the gay waiter pats Shaft’s derrière after muttering “have funsies”. In the 2022 version, the waiter’s hand is not visible, nor is the texture of wood in the raised bar surface. In the 2012 blu-ray, the waiter’s hand is clearly visible and also the texture of the wood. The pattern on the waiter’s shirt is clearer in the 2022 version, though.)Sound:There is a new stereo remaster of the original mono soundtrack which is very good, which is a welcome improvement to the listening experience.Extras:The added extras are welcome in the 2022 version, with features about about Shaft’s cultural impact, the making of the movie, Richard Roundtree, Isaac Hayes, the costume design, etc. Unfortunately there was nothing about the Earnest Tidyman. The inclusion of a blu-ray of “Shaft’s Big Score” is a bonus. I wish they had included “Shaft in Africa”, though.(The five included images were taken with my camera. The images of Shaft and Androzzi were from a 120” projector screen. The 1080p shots were from a 50” plasma TV.)
