If you lived anywhere else in the country, you would probably send your child to your neighborhood high school. In New York City, it’s much more complicated than that.
But what parent has time to research hundreds of school options? To help you choose a high school that is just right for your child, Clara Hemphill and her colleagues at Insideschools visited nearly all of the city’s 400 high schools. This essential revision of the critically acclaimed parents’ guide features new school profiles; invaluable advice to help parents and students through the stressful admissions process; and new sections on alternative schools, vocational schools, and schools for students learning English. Featuring interviews with teachers, parents, and students, this guide uncovers the “inside scoop” about school atmosphere, homework, student stress, competition among students, the quality of teachers, gender issues, the condition of the building, class size, and much more.

Title: Good info if this is your first research
Review: Good book. I am a district 2 resident. Confirmed what I knew- that aside from a few gifted and talented schools and two other public high schools, there are no decent public high schools in New York City for kids that live in Manhattan. If you're picking it up to see if there are other options, and you live in district 2 or similar, don't waste your time.

Title: The High School choice bible
Review: This is a little out of date, but still amazingly useful. I am especially happy that it is out on Kindle, so I can read and review when I need to. NY high school choice is harrowing. Grab this. You won't regret it.

Title: Outdated but Still Useful
Review: I'm giving the book 5 stars because it is a great guidebook for those of us NYC parents who have to figure out the labyrinth that is the public high school process. Clara Hemphill gives you the nuts and bolts of the best public NYC high schools. She gives you the important stats of each of the schools such as average SAT scores, class size and what their admission process. is.HOWEVER, this is outdated (copyright 2007) and many new schools have since opened up. I can't understand why she hasn't updated the book. Has she retired??

Title: Descriptive information, but the book is outdated and biased...
Review: This book may be is descriptive and detailed in some aspects, but it's outdated and some of the schools that are so-called "the best in NYC" have taken a turn for the worst and shouldn't even be on that list--even back then. I mean really. My jaw dropped when I saw the "best high schools" in each borough. The authors of this book seem to favor small high schools as well. The book also skips a lot of good high schools in NYC, like John Dewey High School. Smaller schools, for the most part, do not produce significantly higher results than a large school. Well, I hope a new book that really digs in to the bone on each high school in NYC is published soon.

Title: Smart City Kids NYC Educational Advisory Services
Review: Smart City Kids NYC Educational Advisory service has served the New York City area exclusively longer than any other Advisory Company in NYC. We are The company that schools, non-profit organizations, corporations, and agencies that serve children and families go to in order to get in depth advice on Nursery -12th Grade admissions. Our educational advisors are former Admissions Directors, Nursery School Directors, Placement Directors and Clara Hemphill has served on a few workshops with our company for several years. Her guide is the first and currently the only available book resource that gives insights, opinions and ratings on New York City Public Schools. We highly recommend this very useful tool as a first step to understanding the very complicated world of Public School Admissions.
