Title: Highly recommended
Review: I purchased this speaker base as a replacement for two definitive tech mythos sts towers and definitive tech pro center 2000. I needed to downsize and save some floor space which necessitated me placing the tv in a corner. I also did not want to buy a sound bar and a subwoofer. This speaker base appeared to be the only solution as it provided the LCR front channels and included a built in sub. My plans were to incorporate the pre-existing definitive tech pro monitor 800 speakers for my surrounds in a 5.1 setup. I would be hooking the speaker base up to my yamaha rx-a2040 receiver. At $800 bucks it was far cheaper (in price) than the speakers it was replacing but after reading this product's review on the sound and vision magazine website I felt like I would be happy with it.My living room where this thing is hooked up would be considered, I think, a medium sized room. It's about 2,000 cubic feet and has hard wood floors. I have it set up in the corner. At first listen I was a little concerned. It is quite a change going from my previous set up where the front mains were 9 feet apart to a set up where all three are within three feet or so. The first thing I noticed was the sound field (if that is even the right term) sounded narrower which makes sense to me. This speaker is not as sensitve and "open" as the def techs seemed to be and I found myself turning the volume up a little more. Of course those spearks are in a whole other category on price alone. That being said, after making all of my adjustments and calibrations and listening to various movies, music, etc..., I am impressed by this thing and find it easy to listen to. My biggest concern going in was it's capability as a subwoofer. I can tell you that at least in a room similar to the size of mine, a seperate subwoofer is not needed. There is not that much of a drop off in capability between my last set up and this one and for $800 I think that is pretty impressive. I know the corner set up emphasizes the low frequency sounds, but the bass response is remarkable.Set up wise, I followed the recommendations in the user manual to keep the sub level at 11 o'clock and crossover setting on the sub set to bypass and/or 2 o'clock if using the sub's crossover.. I use the cross over settings on my receiver set to 120 hz. As far as the sweet spot goes when listending to this speaker it seems to be a fairly narrow space, but I'm still happy as I move around to different positions on my two couches. I have found that I prefer to listen to pretty much all material in some form of surround sound with this setup because it really helps to open everything up. For just two channel listening I think I would prefer to have my left and right mains more spread apart. That's why I would recommend using this speaker base as part of a surround sound set up, but that is just my two cents. This speaker is exactly what I was looking for and it has suited my needs perfectly!UPDATE: 02/02/17 - Just figured I would give an update. I've been using this speaker for the last year and still love it. One thing I have found though and maybe it's just in my head is that the sound base seems to open up a bit with the speaker cover off. The speaker cover itself is quite thick and sturdy and protrudes from the base, at its deepest point, nearly an 1 1/4 inches at its center and tapers off towards the ends. One reason for the perceived sound difference could be that the speaker sits below ear level and is not angled up facing the listener. The stand I have this thing is a little over 2 feet tall and when sitting on my couch, my ears are another foot above that. In any event, I just leave the cover off now. When powered properly, it can play quite loud and I forget I'm listening to a "sound base" when I'm listening to music and watching movies. One thing I have come to appreciate with this sound base is that I am not distracted by sounds coming out of the right and left channels when watching a movie. Because the right, center, and left channels are so close to each other, it helps to keep my attention where it should be, on the tv screen. If one already owns a home theater amp/receiver and wants the convenience of a sound bar/sound base setup I really can't think of a better option.

Title: Best Speaker For Apartment Dwellers!
Review: I am absolutely thrilled with this speaker, and it's a shame that so few people seem to know about it! It has an incredibly clear, detailed, and expansive soundstage for TV, movies, and music, with astonishingly good bass. I live in a Manhattan apartment (i.e. small), and refuse to use a floor-standing subwoofer that will disturb my neighbors. With this speaker on a media console supporting my 65" TV, the downward facing subwoofer's bass is largely dissipated before it travels down the media consoles' legs to the floor, saving my neighbors but delivering the full sound that I have been yearning for in an apartment. And, it's not just bass -- the mids and highs are also excellent. Music sounds fantastic, and video dialogue is crystal clear. I have some Paradigm monitors attached to an Arcam amp in another part of the apartment that I find I'm seldom using anymore. The convenience of playing my iPhone through this speaker, via a Marantz NR1608 AVR, is just too convenient given that there's surprisingly little compromise in sound. Really, this is the perfect apartment single-speaker solution if you're short on space, don't want to bother the neighbors, but care about sound. Even if I still lived in a house, I'd love this speaker for the easy set-up and clean, uncluttered look. One important tip: Do NOT use your AVR's sound balancing software (e.g. Audyssey with Marantz and Denon) to set up this speaker -- it will sound awful. I tried it, and initially thought I hated the speaker. I tried resetting with the software repeatedly, but to no good effect. The treble range, in particular, was almost unlistenable. I finally ran across something for another brand of unamplified soundbar that said AVR software should not be used; I then found a good article on CNET that explained how to do it manually. It's ridiculously easy to do manually, using a smartphone to download a db meter. After I set it manually, the sound was fantastic. And, now, the more I've used it the more the speaker has appeared to break in -- it just keeps opening up, revealing wonderfully rich, satisfying sound. I hesitated to spend the money without being able to hear it in a store, but I'm so glad that I did. Atlantic Technology's innovative design is a secret that's way too well kept. They really did a great job with this, and I feel lucky to have found it.

Title: Center Channel Blues
Review: So with the advent of extremely thin TV's, I could not use a shelf connected to the top of the TV for the center channel. Searched for smaller centers but still had the same concern if the screen could support any weight. Other solutions got pretty stupid real fast and a sound bar was definitely not in the play book.Than the light bulb went off!! I remember that Atlantic Tech made a passive speaker base that would cure several issues with a single product.First, I could use my fantastic Cambridge Audio receiver.Second, I could use my rears that were custom install.Third, the front speakers would disappear giving the WAF (Wife Approval Factor) Five Stars and 4 Chef hats!!!Center channel problem solved.Read the reviews and being familiar with Atlantic Tech products since when they introduced their first Dolby system back in the 80's, I immediately cut the cords and modified the lengths for this installation, without hesitation.Well, the sound you ask?? Totally blown away. Worked seamlessly with my rears, after balancing, speech and dialogue was clear and concise and special effects made me wonder why do I need front mains? Here is the bonus!! My 1200 watt super duper sub woofer was turned down and only used to reinforce the LFE slightlyThe bass coming out of this table top was extraordinary and unbelievable. We are ecstatic of what this product offered and being a Home Theater nut for over 30 years we are grateful that a company like Atlantic Tech exist.Simply the best!!!
