Field fortifications and tunnel systems are typically thought of as defensive and active protective measures, but the VC/NVA also employed them offensively. It was common for extensive field works to be constructed to support assaults and sieges on US fire-support bases and remote camps. Their tactics reflected attempts to counter the massive firepower they faced: when directly engaging the enemy they employed “hugging” tactics (moving in and remaining closely engaged, even intermingling units, to prevent the enemy from bringing his artillery and close air support to bear). Their field works included defended villages, base camps, fortified complexes, hilltop defenses, trench systems, individual fighting positions, crew-served weapon positions, bunkers, caches, and extensive tunnel systems. Camouflage and deceptive measures, and the employment of obstacles and booby traps went hand-in-hand with such field works. This book examines these unique fortifications.

Title: Nice book, good illustrations
Review: This is a great book to see and understand how the VC engineered their bunkers and tunnels. Nice color illustrations, and detailed analysis on the construction, and survivability of the different fortifications.

Title: Good information on the enemy's tactics.
Review: A comprehensive review (as much as can be squeezed into an Osprey publication) about NVA and VC tunnels, bunkers and fortifications. With diagrams, schematics and photos, you can get the idea of what they accomplished with so little. Good reading to uncover the other side of the hill. SAA.

Title: Very Detailed and Informative
Review: Yet another great book by Osprey, this goes into great "depth",literally, as it describes the genius designs of the VC/NVA Tunnel and Fighting complexes in 'Nam. Early in the war American Conventional Units were stunned at how the enemy "melted into the jungle", escaping the massive firepower of the west. Tunnels were not unheard of but no one realized the tactical importance of them to the enemy. This book offers the reader very detailed illustrations as to the construction and layout. Complex underground hospitals, command centers, and "dien bein phu kitchens" kept the enemy with the advantage of fight or flight. Add this with "The Tunnels of Cu Chi" and one will get a better sense why the NVA were able to turn the tides of the war in Vietnam.
