(Music Sales America). Mendelssohn's Elijah is an oratorio for SATB soli, SATB chorus, orchestra and organ, with the text derived from the Lutheran Bible by Julius Schubring. The English version of the text was translated by William Bartholemew. This New Novello Choral Edition of the vocal score contains comprehensive performance notes and detailed editorial markings and suggestions, as edited by Michael Pilkington. The German text is also included in the vocal score, and a German translation of the performance notes is also provided.

Title: Score's weight makes it impractical in concert
Review: I was of mixed mind about how to rate this score. All the Novello scores I've ever used were well-edited, and this one is no exception. Besides that, the introductory notes are highly informative, and at times downright fascinating. The problem with those "notes is that they are many pages long, in English, and then are repeated in German. That adds some 50 pages to the score, which is already taller (and thus heavier and slightly more awkward) than many vocal scores. Those extra pages make the score VERY heavy; so heavy that it's impractical to use it in concert. At the very least, it would be tiresome -- literally. I bought this to use as a choral singer in an Elijah performance, but I won't be using it. I've reverted to the old, much more compact Novello edition, put out years ago. I've kept the score, for the notes, and to have access to some of the arias, which I use occasionally in church. If you're looking for a score for use in concert, I recommend weighing carefully (pun intended) whether you (or your singers, if you're the conductor) would be able to stand with this score in your hands for two hours.

Review: I have never heard or sung this work before .. but a good local choir performed it in November last year. So I wanted to know something about it before the concert. The book is a treat to use . Everything I wanted is here .. introduction background .. life of Mendelssohn. And the words are all here .. in German and English.. It's a wonderful work in itself .. very dramatic and exciting .. perhaps Mendelssohn's greatest work. The concert was great and I enjoyed it enormously.I didn't realise that Mendelssohn was born a Jew but later baptised a Christian. This work is an expression of his Jewish nature .. all about events that happened in Israel. It's an exciting experience.

Review: German and English vocal line, print not too small, great introduction, easy-to follow accompaniment line. Exactly the high quality you expect from a Novello. The only downside is that it is quite large and heavy, so can be tiring to hold for the full work and difficult to shoe-horn into a cover, but there's nothing to be done about that!
