In this new collection of his nonfiction, well-known critic and novelist Darrell Schweitzer covers a broad range of matters fantastical, including a massive reconsideration of The Lord of the Rings, pieces on Neil Gaiman and E. R. Eddison's The Worm Ouroboros, the "death" of the horror field, and a not entirely irrelevant visit to the Stoogeum, the world's largest Three Stooges Museum-plus more essays about H. P. Lovecraft, Lord Dunsany, Arthur C. Clarke, Hugo Gernsback, Robert Nathan, alternate histories, and the culture of bookselling. A marvelous read for an evening's literary entertainment.

Title: Now that you've been t the edge of the universe, spend a little time to find out what you've seen.
Review: I ran in to Daryl at Capclave 2010, the DC area SF Lit Con, and we got to talking about genre fiction and accessible criticism. Being the fine self promoter he is, Daryl told me I had to read Fantastic Horizons, and having $20 on me and not good excuse not to, I said sure. Why not? What's the worst that could happen? As it turns out, Daryl is an excellent essayist, with a lot of interesting and well thought out things to say. He intentionally engages your incredulity (Tolkien as a horror writer?), then offers up a well reasoned case to uphold his premise. And he does it in a very readable fashion. If you've been reading fantasy, horror, or science fiction for a while and have a desire to go beyond plots and explosions to uncover a bit of the meaning behind your favorite books...this might be a good place to start.Ernest Lilley
