Title: The best I found under $200
Review: Any of these are going to greatly improve the sound over plugging your headphones directly into the mini-jack on a computer.Listening was done with a few different headphones but mostly with beyerdynamic DT 700 PRO X Closed-Back Studio Headphones. Music source was a laptop connected to the DAC/Headphone Amp via USB. If an external power supply was included, I used that. If not, power came via USB.I've kept notes on my impressions brief and included comparisons amongst the DAC/Amp's in this list. They are listed below in my order of preference with my favorites at the top. If you want flowery vocabulary I'm sure in depth reviews are available out there on the web.Headphones make the greatest difference in sound - spend more on them, if necessary. The DAC/Amp is secondary but does add its own flavor to the music.---iFi Zen DAC V2 | Desktop Digital Analog Converter(Listening only with "TRUEBASS" off.)Very good.Slightly better than the FiiO K7. Better vocal clarity and slightly fuller bass.I ended up comparing this with the FX-Audio DAC-X6 head to head, which continued to surprise me as I put it up against significantly more expensive competitors. Across several hours and many pieces of music, I prefer the iFi... but the difference is infinitesimal. Possibly the iFi has a little more punch to the bass? Maybe a bit more space ans separation? If you're working to a budget, get the FX-Audio and put the extra cash towards better headphones.FX-Audio DAC-X6 Mini HiFi 2.0 Digital Audio Decoder DACThis thing is good. Surprisingly good. I ended up putting it head-to-head with amps costing three times its price.Slightly warmer sound, with slightly less detail in the vocals than the iFi Zen Air, but more space in the music, and more enjoyable to listen to. Slightly better clarity than the Topping.FiiO K7 Full Balanced HiFi DAC Headphone AmplifierThis is indeed better than the K5 version. Vocals are more lifelike. And a particular emphasis on the mid-treble heard in the K5 is absent. There is more separation between the instruments.Very close call with the iFi V2, with my preference going to the iFi for better vocal clarity and slightly fuller bass.iFi Zen Air DACNot quite as good as the V2, but close. Closer than the FiiO K5 is to the K7. There is, again, a comparative emphasis in mid-treble and the vocals get a bit lost. The sound is slightly thin compared to rivals at this price point.FiiO K5 Pro Headphone Amps Portable Desktop DAC and AmplifierNot quite as good as the K7, but at half the price one cannot really complain. Vocals are not quite as lifelike and there is more mid-treble - but not in a good way.Topping DX1 Mini Stereo DAC Headphone Amplifier ComboVery good little unit. Bass is slightly overemphasized.Fosi Audio K5 Pro Gaming DAC Headphone AmplifierI thought this unit was DOA. Turns out that you must long press the volume knob to turn it on. (Short press to select input.)Not terrible, but not as musical as the others in this test. Also, the only one with bass and treble knobs. And only a mini-jack - no 1/4" jack.Pro-Ject Head Box S2 DigitalThis DAC/Amp had an issue that makes it unlistenable. The sound is very nice... but... there's some faint static. Only in the music, not in silence. A faint crackling.... Can't have that.

Title: Amazing amazing amazing!
Review: This is one secret I with I'd known about before. I've always used Fiio and Diablo's etc. Then I got these recommended. I thought "why do I need mid tier DAC"? Because this is amazingly good, that's why! I mean beyond $1000+ DAC's easily! I put on Pink Floyd DSOTM with Sennheiser HD600's and nearly fell over! Sound is truly incredible with clarity and depths I was not expecting! Then I hit the "Truebass" button expecting the usual muffed scrubbed highs and mids, but no. Truebass is actually amazingly good and adds without taking anything away! Punchy pure clean sounds that are so good I cannot believe it. Build quality is really sturdy with a really interesting shape. Brushed metal and a volume knob so smooth you'd expect in a Bentley. Has balanced and non balanced front and back, digital in and USB can be supported with a DC (not included) power brick. There is a led behind the volume knob that detects with the input is flac, mp3, MQA, MQA studio etc and will change colour so you can see instantly with your listening to, really nice touch. In fact, I would say try this Zen DAC V2 before you break your bank account. I'm the most fussy audiophile on the planet. For me to be this enthusiastic about any sound tech after 50 years of audio engineering means it's good, really really good! Remember, this doesn't come with a power brick. The Zen power bricks are very expensive! It will run, very well without one. Just the USB (check the type. It's not anything you probably have) will run just fine. Zen does supply the USB but it's very very short. Don't fall for the gold USB from Mars nonsense. Digital is 1's and 0's and just a regular cable is plenty. But add the power brick and it's got more oomph. All power is handled automatically, there is no on switch, if you add a power brick to the USB it's automatically dealt with. Just sit back and enjoy... It's amazing.

Title: Fantastic Value for a first DAC
Review: This is a fantastic DAC for the price with so many features that I love. The build is of the highest quality, very durable metal, and the volume knob is as smooth as it gets, just amazing. There is plenty of power on this DAC unless you need huge amounts of power (You would need a dedicated amp for really high impedance headphones). The "true bass" feature is very impressive: it does muddle the sound a bit but this is by far the best implementation of a bass boost that have ever heard. More than likely you will need another cable since the one provided is so small, that would by the only negative criticism I have for this DAC.If you are using IEM's on this DACI would recommend an impedance adapter. For IEMs this DAC is too noisy. The only IEM that I can use without any issues are Planar IEMs since they benefit from the extra power. I would stick to headphones.

Title: Absolutely Excellent... for balanced output
Review: This DAC/AMP is fantastic. I was using it with Spotify for a while, then decided to try Tidal, and WOW, what a difference. Everything is crystal clear, for someone like me, a beginner audiophile, this sounds incredible.I am listening to this iFi Zen on a pair of HiFiMans Sundara's, with a balanced cable, and for the money spent, its an incredible combo. If you are looking for the best audio experience for under $600, this combo will not be beat.Oh, ALSO, the bass button is great. Some songs need it, others don't, so its great to have the quick toggle within arm's reach. Excellent integrated pre-amp bass boost. The quality of the material here is excellent too, and the volume knob feels premium and smooth. The only downside some may have is the housing design, but thats a subjective take.Ultimately, do you want balanced output for your phones? Then get this. I should note, that phones don't need balanced output and its basically just a luxury that allows more power delivery, not more sound quality.

Review: This is a really nice headphone amp. I do think there's room for improvement but overall it's a very solid choice for a headphone amp and dac combo.Pros:- Very clean sound- Very good bass boost option that doesn't muddy the details- All metal premium feel- Buttery smooth volume control- Fixed RCA out. I also use this as just a dac for an old stereo- RCA and Headphone out simultaneously- Nice design, not just a plain box like most audio equipment- Option for external power which makes it work with things like phones or a raspberry piCons:- No on/off switch so mine is just always on- The included USB cable is way too short- At this price I think it should have more inputs besides USB (Coaxial/Toslink)My only other note would be on the bass boost itself. It would be great if there was a level in between off and on as it's usually too strong for my headphones but that's not really a complaint of this product as it would be a perfect feature for other headphones.

Review: I am old school and still much prefer the sound of vinyl when played through a good HiFi system. However I store a lot of my music on my PC nowadays, it's so much more convenient. Therefore I wanted a midpriced DAC to playback my collection through my HiFi system. After doing my research and finding a lot of quality DACs are out of my price range, I ended up considering either the Topping or Ifi Zen V2. In the end I brought the Zen V2. I was persuaded by it's excellent reviews and also a heavily discounted price. The sound is warm, closer to my taste than the harsh bright digital CD sound reproduction. The clarity and open sound stage are far better than I expected, and it copes just as well with heavy rock as it does with classical music. My music files on the PC are mainly FLAC files so the information is there I just needed a DAC that can process it. The ZEN V2 does that job brilliantly. I do have some MP3 files and they playback fine but there is an obvious drop in quality, clarity isn't top end by any means, but that's what I'd I expect from MP3 files. All in all it's a cracking unit, a worthy addition to any Mid Range HiFi system and one I'd highly recommend at the current price of £200, let alone the heavily discounted price I got it for.Definitely 5 Stars, it doesn't just meet my expectations, it exceeds them, it's a joy to listen to.One last point, do use decent interconnect cables, you will notice the difference in the sound quality.

Review: After a ton of research and reading reviews I finally got the gadget today, a day ahead of the promised date of delivery (great work Amazon) and I am more than pleased with the gadget that was going on non-stop for a couple of hours before I decided to give it a break. The ZEN is much smaller than what I had imagined in my mind but it feels solid in its construction. First off, the ZEN DAC V2 doesn't require additional power than what is provided to it via its USB cable. Once connected to a laptop that is powered on, you'll notice a glow behind the knob of the ZEN indicating that it has been switched on. There is no separate power switch. The cable provided is short and therefore I have ordered a longer cable. Just make sure the cable is of the similar type i.e. USB 3 A to B. I have ordered the UGREEN 6ft long cable and have posted a review under the product (search in Amazon). There are others from brands such as CABLE MATTERS but these are pricier and take much longer for delivery. Since I have a music system I was going to hook up the ZEN to my amplifier and it's a breeze as the ZEN offers RCA outputs. Now flip the switch at the back to FIXED and you are all set. You can play high quality music i.e 320kbps .mp3s on your laptop or .flac or .wav files and the ZEN converts them neatly into analogue format for your amplifier. It hardly breaks a sweat. Even after playing for hours it was hardly warm. Btw, the Bass button on the ZEN DAC (with the FIXED option) made no difference while playing music via my integrated amplifier. I then switched to the VARIABLE setting on the ZEN and played the music via headphones. Bass boost switch does have some effect here though I was not very keen on this feature. For my amplifier I do have a powered subwoofer and if I needed the extra bass I could always use that one. Also this time the knob on the ZEN comes into play to increase the volume of the music being played via the headphones. I tried the Power Match switch and it did increase the volume on the headphones. So what is the source of my music? I just subscribed to Apple Music and the pic of the ZEN converting Apple Lossless 100% on the product page comes to mind and it does that AS PROMISED. I actually couldn't believe what I was listening to on my system. Apple Music's collection is humungous and listening to the rare "How to name it" album by Ilaiyaraaja was pure magic. Low, High and Midrange come alive and so true to the original recording as Apple's sound quality promises. On top of it you can create innumerable playlists and store frequently played stuff in the Library, there is actually no need for any more buying of music media. It is all here like an audiophile's dream. I then played a variety of music, Indian film songs spanning several decades, classical, heavy metal, classic rock and the music was top fidelity. But do keep your 320kbps mp3 and .flacs that you have on your PC. The DAC will help you play them all too. Go for this DAC without any regrets. I highly recommend it. It could be your last music gear for music provided you also have a Music subscription. Will post another update if I need to in the coming days or weeks. (Update - 20-6-2094) - If your TV doesn't have USB 3 (chances that it may not) connect your laptop to your TV via a good HDMI cable (at least 4k 60 Hz, check your TV for its HDMI specs) and connect your laptop to the ZEN DAC V2 using the USB 3 A to B cable and then connect the DAC via RCA cables to your amplifier for a mind-blowing performance. (Update - 29-06'2024) Though I had a Spotify account, I didn't check it till today and wow does the quality of Audio blow me away. Easily beats Apple Music. Though Apple's collection is humungous after repeated listens and subsequently comparisons I found the musc lacking bass and punch. Spotify's music has both. Some of the recordings are at par with the CD recordings I own and therefore I highly recommend Spotify over Apple Music.

Customers say
Customers are satisfied with the sound quality, build quality, and value of the electronic signal converter. They mention it has a great feel to it, with heavy-duty rubber feet. Many find it worth buying for the price. However, opinions differ on functionality, power, and volume control.
