In USA Today bestselling author Julie Anne Long’s latest installment in the Palace of Rogues series, an estranged couple decide to fake their way through the London season to repair their good name… but neither are prepared for the genuine sparks that begin flying between them.
A blue-blooded beauty bartered to a Beast…
He would pay any price to possess her. But even though Alexandra Bellamy sacrifices herself to save her family’s fortunes, a shocking betrayal sunders her marriage to a taciturn brute of a war hero, Colonel Magnus Brightwall, before it even begins. Five years of icy separation later, a scandal—with Alexandra at the middle—reunites them, and Magnus issues an edict: they will confront the ton, rescue their reputations, then Magnus will banish her to another continent—forever.
But alone in a suite at the Grand Palace on the Thames, a new battle begins—between pride and the unexpected volcanic passion stirring between them. The danger is real: Magnus rediscovers why Alexandra is the only woman who could ever break him. And even as she lays bare the beautiful heart beating beneath the battered hide of the near-stranger she married, Alexandra knows she may have already lost him—even as she finally falls fatally, irrevocably in love.

Title: Emotional Second Chance at Love
Review: FINAL DECISION: The emotional depth, beautiful prose, masterful character development, and perfect balance of angst and humor make this one of my favorite books of the year. Long never disappoints. This is a second chance story of an estranged couple finding their way back to one another.THE STORY: Colonel Magnus Brightwall, an orphan who rose to become a war hero, arranges a marriage with Alexandra Bellamy by offering to save her family's fortunes. A misunderstanding on their wedding night drives them apart, sending Magnus to Spain for five years. Upon his return to England, scandal forces them to share quarters at the Grand Palace on the Thames while seeking a courtesy title from the king. Though Magnus plans to exile Alexandra to his American estate afterward, their forced proximity begins to change both their hearts and their futures.OPINION: I loved this book. There is some angst, but this book, as so many of Long's books are -- is a meditation on love, giving and sacrifice.I loved Magnus. He appears at first the stern war hero, but we quickly discover his soft, gooey heart beneath the stern exterior. His journey from an unwanted orphan to respected colonel shapes him deeply, but Long reveals his vulnerable heart with expert care. Every scene peels back another layer of this complex man who yearns for love but fears it simultaneously.Alexandra is his perfect matchâstrong, intelligent, and willing to face their shared past honestly. What I particularly appreciated was how the story avoided unnecessary drama. Magnus and Alexandra made mistakes in their past, and the story doesn't shy away from showing how they each contributed to their failed marriage. Yet perhaps only now, with years of growth between them, can they truly see and understand each other. The story's strength lies in its intimate focus. Long doesn't waste time on unnecessary plot devices, instead crafting a beautifully claustrophobic narrative in which Magnus and Alexandra spend time together, learning about each other through shared meals, conversations, and adventures at the Palace. Their gradual rediscovery of each other through these quiet moments and delightful escapades feels genuine and weighty. The emotional intimacy between them is breathtakingâLong writes the scenes where they are together with such beauty and raw emotion.WORTH MENTIONING: This book has some great humor -- donkey races and ghosts.CONNECTED BOOKS: THE BEAST TAKES A BRIDE is the 8th book in the Palace of Rogues series. While it stands alone perfectly, familiarity with previous books enhances appreciation of the boarding house setting and its delightfully eccentric residents.STAR RATING: I give this book 5 stars.NOTE: I received an eARC of this book via Netgalley in order to assist in writing this review. Title: I love a Julie Ann Long story
Review: My heart is always so full at the end of one of Ms Longâs historical romances. I always have a goofy smile on my face and a contentment in my heart. Her characters are always so wonderfully well developed. She pulls you right into their story so that you hurt when they hurt and are so very glad when they find their happy ever after. Magnus and Alexandra are two of her best characters yet. Their story was so realistic and satisfying

Review: This was my first encounter with Julie Anne Long's work and it was truly an incredibly delightful experience. This story and the characters had so much depth, it was raw at times, but with so much real emotion (a rarity these days), that I got tears in my eyes several times (that letter!). I loved both MC's, but my heart went in particular out to Magnus. I did not approve of Alexandra kissing another man on her wedding day, no matter what explanation she had for it afterwards. After all, she was a grown sensible woman of twenty-two, not some naive simpering ninny. She had accepted his marriage proposal and thus made her choice. I honestly felt sincerely sorry for the disrespectful way Alexandra treated Magnus back then and hurt him immensely. Fortunately, she âredeemedâ herself afterwards and regained all my sympathy.Absolutely loved this story... its warmth, the sincere feelings, the pain, the humor and of course...the love. Beautiful, beautiful love story!
