The purpose of the first part of this book is to make you familiar with the plants around you that can be used in place of doctor visits, emergency room trips, visits to your dentist, and even for food if you need it. Did you ever wonder how great-great grandma and her family survived, living way out in the country where there were no hospitals or doctors and the dentist was the circuit riding preacher or peddler? These people had a working knowledge of the land and the plants that God gave us. Some of it they learned from their parents and some of it they acquired from the native peoples, like the Indians, where they lived. This knowledge saved many lives and made their aches and pains much easier. Backyard Pharmacy is intended to make you comfortably familiar with simple herbs that grow in the countryside around you. If you do not live where they are, learn anyway. Maybe your friends will have them in their backyards or woods. At the present we can all order the dried forms of these from herb companies like the ones listed in the supplies area of the book. But fresh ones work best and someday other sources may not be available for us. I, for one, want to know where to find the things I need and be knowledgeable in how to use them. Learn along with me and be pleasantly surprised at how much “weeds” can do. As you try new remedies, know that no one remedy works for every person. If one herb does not work for you, try a different one. You will likely find another herb that works better for you. Know that if you do go to the doctor and tell him the remedy that you were using, he will likely scoff openly. He does not usually know anything about herbs, especially the ones that have never been covered in the medical journals. So do not despair, thinking that you are making a huge mistake since your doctor does not know what burdock or dandelion can do for the body.

Title: What a wonderful book not written by some witchy wacko!
Review: This is my new favorite! Written by a down to earth woman who doesn't talk about singing to plants or making alters to them. Just basic plant identification, what the plant does or doesn't do and herbal remedies and how to make them. Well worth the price.

Title: More useful than I had imagined
Review: It is amazing how much can be gained from WEEDS! The very things we chop down and discard can perhaps be the source of healing. It makes perfect sense though....how many times do weeds languish? More often than not they flourish, sometimes even in the poorest of soils or in the bleakest conditions. Though I have not tried any of the specific recommendations in this book, I have begun to identify the useful weeds. On a visit to a mountain park with extended family, I was delighted to see a quarter acre plot of wild plantain. Instead of thinking about it as a field of weeds, as I would have before reading this book, I thought immediately that this was a medically useful plant! It made it a joy to walk through the field and I marveled at the way nature's God provides. At home, those "sticky" plants that seem to grow so prolifically have a potential use that exceeds their ability to cause annoyance. It is a good read, whether or not you plan to actually use the weeds as described.

Title: Must have!
Review: All of Rachel's books are amazing! Her first book has sat front and center in our home library for many years being well used and loved. It is my go to book for any acute need I don't know off the top of my head. She did not disappoint with her two follow up books. I received them in perfect timing to assist my family in further healing. All Rachel Weaver books are worth the cost. These books should be in every home.

Review: I have the "Be Your Own Doctor" book from the same author and loved it so much I had to get this one. I've just started reading this book but so far it's as great as the other one and has plenty of useful information on using the herbs. If you only have 2 books in your home medicine arsenal, I would pick this and the other one I mentioned. They are that good. Such incredibly helpful information that I've used over and over again. Thanks Rachel for writing these and enabling people to be more proactive with their health, rather than relying on doctors who often are too busy to be up-to-date on the latest, and quite often ill-equipped and ignorant of the benefits of the plant world. (They do great in other areas, but not this one.) Highly recommended

Review: My mom is very big on doing things the natural way. Big pharma is not always the best way to do things and this book gives a ton of extra ways of looking at everyday products and plants and healing. It’s pretty amazing actually. Would buy any book this lady writes.
