Firms with superior IT governance have more than 25% higher profits than firms with poor governance given the same strategic objectives. These top performers have custom designed IT governance for their strategies. Just as corporate governance aims to ensure quality decisions about all corporate assets, IT governance links IT decisions with company objectives and monitors performance and accountability. Based on a study of 250 enterprises worldwide, IT Governance shows how to design and implement a system of decision rights that will transform IT from an expense to a profitable investment.

Title: An excellent discussion about who should manage what in IT + 10 year update
Review: This is an excellent book on the topic of IT governance. There are no answers to be found, only a compass to finding the answers that are right for your company. It goes to the heart of the painful question of what part of the corporate IT function should be handed to the corporate geeks and to the bean counters in accounting. The book expands on an article in Harvard Business Review by the same authors. The book is well written, although overly droning and long in some parts. Overall, it is one of the most original and understandable discussions of the topic. Highly recommended if your interest is in controlling IT expenditures without losing sight of the strategic opportunities that it offers. Buy--don't borrow--a copy. You'll want to dogear some pages that alone justify the thirty dollar price tag.2015 update to my 2004 review:-----------------------------Over ten years later, this book is still unsurpassed in terms of the relevance and depth of coverage. Many IT fads have come and gone (think SOA, Green IT) and the field has had nice new advances (cloud computing, apps, ecosystems). Yet the topics in this book are enduring. The most original aspects in this book, in retrospect, are: (a) the whole discussion about decision rights, (b) centralization versus decentralization of IT, and (c) the discussion of how IT infrastructure and apps must be tackled separately but must also cohere. The second author also published an article in HBR ("Six IT decisions IT should not make") that is a nice complement to this book. I still highly recommend this book.

Title: Good with Academic Slant
Review: A recent Dilbert cartoon had Dogbert telling management, "You need a dashboard full of information that you can ignore to make decisions in light of corporate politics" and I was reminded of this book.Essentially, the authors outline numerous excellent examples of governance strategies and archetypes to put into place. However, there are three caveats that come with this book and its recommendations:1. If you are with a small to mid-sized company, it will take significant work on your part to adapt these practices to a company of less than 250 employees. The larger your company, the more of the author's advice you can put into play...assuming you have the capability and are not hindered by corporate politics and organizational fiefdoms - and thus my association with Dilbert's cynicism.2. The diagram on page 109 [hardcover] of the governance structures gone bad (i.e. what the strategies look like in companies that have adopted the talk, but not walked the walk) needed a section or a chapter devoted to suggestions on how to avoid...or at least mitigate the risk of...those undesirable behaviors.3. The writing style is noticeably academic in its tone and, as a result, some of its recommendations come off as being "pat answers"; compare with books like FROM BUSINESS STRATEGY TO IT ACTION and other strategy-level studies. That said, for any consultant dealing with regulatory compliance, IT or organizational structures, the book belongs on your shelf as a resource to draw from. For a C-level executive or governance board director, consider reviewing this book and using its best practices as long-term targets.J. Avellanet, Co-Founder of Cerulean Associates LLC

Title: One of the best quotes I've ever seen and use often.
Review: "Companies with the most effective IT Governance systems enjoy 10-25% higher profitability"This concept is relevant regardless of the size or age of your business. Using frameworks such as COBIT, CMMI, and ITIL in your organizations may cost a bit of investment of upfront but the pay back gained by selecting the right projects, executing the project work the right way by mitigating risk and building in quality up front and then taking care of the customer after the sale is crucial to staying in business and maintaining profitability.

Title: Helped me re-write our IS Governance Policy
Review: This is a clear, thorough book on IS Governance. I bought it to help us rewrite our IS Policies, and found it to be very helpful. I read it cover to cover and it is now filled with highlights and sticky notes. The research the authors did has helped me justify some assertions and recomendations we make in the new policy. Not a beach read, but it helped me get my job done so I could go to the beach!

Title: IT Governance - the best choice for better decisions
Review: This book really contributed with my MBA research about the value of IT Governance initiatives as tangible demonstration of value to the business. Peter Weill and Jeanne W. Ross provides an analytical and focused view in how to extract the best of IT Governance to achieve business sucess and business outcomes. Although, from my opinion, the reading requires some minimum IT Governance experience to initiate effective and prompt actions based on insights you might have after read. Really good book!

Title: Awesome content - Terribly ported into Kindle Format
Review: Though the content of this book has been phenomenal, the Kindle Port of it is TERRIBLE. The table of contents is only chapter level, which is highly disappointing. The book has NOT been optimised to be read electronically. Sadly, this is one of the best books on IS Strategy and Governance and I love the Governance Design Framework and most other content taught in the book....

Title: Good introduction on IT Governance
Review: Does an excellent job of breaking down the categories of IT decisions and showing who should be involved in what decisions based on your company's strategic focus in one of the key areas of customer intimacy, operational excellence, or product leadership. Key point is that not all decisions should be made by the same individuals in the company. This book is a very good introduction in to IT Governance and why it is critical for companies to spend time on to determine who should be involved in making the decisions that will guide their IT function and drive true business value rather than delegate IT to just a cost center.

Title:

Title:
Review: My previous exposure to IT governance was via the IT Governance Institute's COBIT control framework. Weill and Ross takes a completely different approach which I consider more practical and pragmatic. The work is research driven and draws from the best practices of companies that successfully implemented IT governance practices. This book walks you through what decisions must be made based on the company structure, who should make these decisions, then how to make and monitor the decisions. The ultimate goal is to control behaviour for successful IT governance. After reading this book I have actually learned how to really design governance, how to devise and implement the right governance mechanisms and which IT metrics to implement in order to monitor governance. Successful companies implement good IT governance in support of company strategy. To be effective IT leaders must embrace governance, work on getting buy-in from company senior leadership, manage IT governance from the top of the IT leadership chain and shape behaviour for the successful use of IT in the organization.
