Red Arrow Men: The 32nd Division on the Villa Verde Trail, first published in 1945, is the account of 'embedded journalist' John Carlisle with the U.S. Army's 32nd Infantry Division in Luzon, Philippines, in 1945. At that time, the 32nd was engaging the Japanese on the Villa Verde Trail. It would take 119 days of fierce, close-quarters combat to advance slightly more than 20 miles over rough, jungle-covered terrain, and seize their objective of the Cagayan Valley. As author Carlisle states in the Foreword: "This was a mauling fight against the Jap in his remarkable defensive positions, against the terrain, supply and climate. In those 119 days the Red Arrow boys fought 22 miles, sometimes 35 yards at a time, with the Jap never more than 30 feet away. The division killed 9,000 Japanese and took 50 prisoners. It lost 4,226 men, about a third of the division strength." Their hard-won victory saw the surrender of Japanese General Tomoyuki Yamashita and his exhausted, starving troops. Red Arrow Men portrays these experiences from the perspective of the foot-soldier, most of whom were from Michigan, and Carlisle talked with many men (and a number of WACs and female Red Cross workers), and relates their moving stories. Of note is that in World War Two, the 32nd Division logged a total of 654 days of combat, more than any other United States Army division.

Title: eye witness
Review: I really enjoyed reading the eye witness account of WW2 in Luzon. I bought this book specifically because it was about Luzon in WW2. My great uncle died in Luzon during WW2 and so itâs been difficult to find out things specifically about his part in the war. So even though he was somewhere doing something at this time it was good to read about the atmosphere and things in the general region he was in.

Title: Censored, but still ...
Review: When your nation is fielding two million soldiers in disparate hemispheres, a lot of important stories never reach the public. This is a newspaper reporter's account about a very tough if fairly obscure battle amid dozens of battles. But it's an important story written for the consumption of the folks back in southeast Michigan. It obviously was sanitized by the military censors. Nonetheless, it gives the picture of an almost hopeless tactical situation that these citizen soldiers overcame.

Title: Very awesome to read.
Review: My grandfather was in the Luzon campaign at least if not more. I purchased the book so that I could get a good idea what he went through. I really enjoyed reading through the eyes of someone who lived it. Thank you

Title: Good Account of the Red Arrow Division.
Review: My Dad was in the 32nd Division and fought in the Philippines in WW II. Wanted to read accounts of what my Dad experienced. Thought it was detailed and factual. The battles were reminiscent of what my Dad told me, which was very little. Just like most WW II veterans, he did not like to talk about his experiences in the war. Good book for anyone who wants to know more about the fighting in the South Pacific, especially in the Philippines.
