In this beautifully packaged 16-CD set, EMI Classics is proud to release Klaus Tennstedt's complete Mahler recordings. Tennstedt was renowned as a Mahler interpreter. While his discography includes recordings of Beethoven, Brahms, Strauss, Wagner, Prokofiev and Kodaly, the centerpiece of his recorded legacy is the Mahler cycle he recorded with the London Philharmonic. Tennstedt's affinity for Mahler, however, was something he did not develop until his career was well established, partly because Mahler's music was banned by the Nazis during his student years. "I came late to Mahler," he told Roy Hemming in an interview for Keynote magazine in 1985. "And I think maybe that is better. Except for Mahler's First Symphony, I think you need experience in life before you can be a good interpreter of Mahler. All the things he composed in his works -- love, hate, fear, joy, cynicism, all this -- you cannot fully understand when you are young." Tennstedt set about Mahler with a unique and dangerous intensity. Heeding neither caution nor fashion, he embodied the composer's expressed preference for exaggeration. Every rehearsal became a life-and-death struggle; each concert required a health warning, the musicians fearing for his safety and their own. His Mahler recordings contain the most terrifying of Sixths -- a symphony in which Tennstedt heard pre-echoes of Nazi horrors -- and the most lyrical of Sevenths. His account of the Eighth Symphony is unaffectedly majestic, the first credible record of that gigantic unresolved question.

Title: Excellent choice for full Mahler set. Good introduction for Mahler newbies.
Review: Tennstedt’s Mahler 1 was released to great acclaim in 1978 followed by his equally praised Mahler 2. At the time, some called him the greatest living Mahler conductor. The 16 discs contained here include Tennstedt’s entire Mahler cycle with the London Philharmonic, together with Das Lied AND live versions of the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Symphonies from a second live cycle cut short by his death. In my opinion every performance is at least very good and some performances achieve benchmark status. I have read some of the reviews of those who disagree posted here, and can only say that illustrates the tremendously different ways Mahler has been approached. Tennstedt gives us the vast Mahler and the dramatic Mahler, two critical elements of Mahler’s ouvre.Mahler famously said that a symphony should be the “whole world,” and he spent his entire career as an internationally renowned opera conductor. I’m not a musician, critic or an audiophile. I haven’t heard every Mahler recording. To my detriment, I have not heard the Mahler of Barbiroli or Horenstein yet, but given the virtually limitless ways Mahler can be interpreted I have always found it desirable to have 3-4 versions of each of the Mahler symphonies, and the Tennstedt recordings are all darn good or better. The Second Symphony is by far the best I have heard. Just when you think the chorus has reached its climax, it peaks higher, again and again, until it seems to envelop the space around you. The live Sixth exceeds the remarkable, astringent and precise Szell/Cleveland live recording that has always been my benchmark, with Tennstedt’s silent third hammer blow following a tension buildup that makes the silent blow feel louder than the first two. As typical with integral sets, not every performance is the very best available. I still prefer Kubelik’s first and Bernstein’s live fifth, for example. But for the whole ball of wax all in one place, this is an outstanding choice.

Title: One of the two best complete sets of Mahler
Review: Not all of the recordings are in the A+ category but enough meet the "best of show" test to make this box well worth the investment. I am not enough of a Mahler student to be able to provide meaningful comments on the artistry of the performances, but I have both Bernstein sets (Sony and DG) and Bertini with Klon Radio SO and I find this to be the one that brings me the most pleasure top to bottom. There are of course other ways to build a library of the best performances (for you) of each of Mahler's symphonies (Rattle at Birmingham and Abbado at Vienna or Berlin stand out) but for one stop shopping this set is hard to beat.

Title: Is A Completely Satisfactory Mahler Cycle Possible?
Review: What follows is my personal opinion, a point I emphasize because I'm not arguing with those who admire this cycle. The question it raises for me, however, is one that occurs with almost all the Mahler cycles I've heard, viz., can any conductor do a completely satisfactory Mahler cycle because of the vast differences between the symphonies. Some have said--incorrectly, IMHO--that Bruckner essentially wrote the same symphony nine times and reached his creative peak in the 7th, 8th, and 9th. But it's true that Bruckner symphonies have a coherence that makes many Bruckner cycles satisfying altogether,But Mahler requires a far different approach in the 3rd and 8th symphonies than in, say, the 1st and 6th. And there's a palpable difference between early (1-4), middle (5-7), and late (9 & DAS LIED) ... (I'm not sure where the 8th, the one I like the least, should be placed!!!)I'm not a musician so forgive my ignorance of subtle issues, but where there's a discernible difference in idiom between a composer's works, it seems to me that a conductor's fated to excel in some at the expense of others. Has any conductor, for example, offered equally splendid versions of Mozart's ZAUBERFLOETE and LA CLEMENCA DE TITO? Answer: Karl Boehme? I don't think I agree, and not just because the latter is an anachronistic (even in Mozart's day) bore for the most part.Last point: I have never heard a Mahler cycle that's completely satisfactory because of the various demands, but there at least a half-dozen Bruckner cycles that are excellent in every respect. My opinion, alas, not musically astute, just the point of view of someone who enjoys listening to great music passionately if not with a musician's ear.

Title: Finest, by far
Review: Finest, by far, of all the collections of complete Mahler symphonies, and I have both of Bernstein's and the Solti and individual symphonies by several others, and have heard them live, and even sung in the 8th. Tennstedt brings his insight depth and humanity to the endeavor, and elicits terrific technique and gorgeous tone from the London Philharmonic, who play with brilliance and warmth. The recorded sound by EMI is likewise thrilling.

Title: Master Mahler Interpreter
Review: I've never heard the LPO sound better.Tennstedt was able to mould his players to capture the most subtle of this composer's idiomatic neuroses with a flare and comprehension that only the finest of Mahler interpreters can summon. The bonus live documentation of Symphonies Five, Six and Seven put this set over the top as an essential collection for Mahler and Tennstedt enthusiasts. At discount prices, this set should be grabbed up not only by devotees of these performers, but also by the music-loving public in general.
