When? Can t I open just one? Please? The minutes, the hours, the eons of waiting and wondering. What s underneath the shiny silver paper? Behind the enormous red bow? Under the tree?
Who doesn t remember what it was like to be a kid at Christmas? And who hasn t yearned to go back in time to recapture that special feeling? Well, we can t turn back the clock, but we can do the next best thing. We can bring a bit of the past into the present. In Under the Tree, Susan Waggoner, author of Stewart, Tabori and Chang s It s a Wonderful Christmas, takes a loving, nostalgic look at the toys and gifts that made the postwar American Christmas the big deal it was.
Under the Tree revisits gifts both large and small, from Mr. Machine and the Kenner Easy-Bake Oven to Moon Rocks, Silly Putty, Sea Monkeys, and other delights that stuffed our stockings. In addition to the fascinating stories behind each toy, the book is bursting with cultural history, quotes, and lore all wrapped up with more than 100 full-color vintage illustrations. For anyone who s ever been a kid at Christmas, Under the Tree will be as irresistible as a kiss under the mistletoe.

Title: Fantastic walk down memory land
Review: I am a baby boomer and this book really took me back to my childhood. It is not only shows vintage ads for products, but includes wonderful little tidbits of trivia and history of them and the different time periods. I thoroughly enjoyed and recommend it to anyone who loves Christmas and nostalgia.

Title: A wonderful book for any age
Review: I got this for my son, who is 17. I'd given him Susan Waggoner's other Christmas book "It's a Wonderful Christmas 1940-1965' a couple years ago as an afterthought gift, and he really dug it, and had put this one on his wish list this year. It's a great little coffee table book! Lots of old toy ads and so forth. A fun book for any age, obviously, when kids who were nowhere near being born during the time period of the book subject matter love it. Recommended!

Title: Was very happy to find this on Amazon
Review: I bought one of Susan Waggoner's books at the Christmas shop in Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World. Wanted to get another one when I was there last month, but they did not have them anymore. Was very happy to find this on Amazon. This book is so interesting and brings back a lot of childhood memories.

Title: Under the Tree: The Toys and Treats That Made Christmas Special, 1930-1970
Review: Great way to relive the childhood Christmases. I sat with my grandchildren and showed them the toys we got for Christmas when we were little. I have 3 of Susan Waggoners nostalgic books. Enjoyed them all and the folks who received the ones I gave as gifts bought more of their own.Under the Tree: The Toys and Treats That Made Christmas Special, 1930-1970

Title: Not as enjoyable as Waggoner's other Christmas books
Review: This is the third Christmas book by Susan Waggoner that I've read. I didn't find this one as enjoyable as "It's a Wonderful Christmas" and "Christmas Memories." "Under the Tree" is essentially a round-up of toys through the ages and had little to do with Christmas. I started off happily reading and enjoying myself, but as the chapters went on, I started to lose interest. This was a marked difference from her previous books where I could happily spend a good hour or two losing myself in the pages and soaking up the fun of American Christmases past. I think the difference was that this book was solely about the toys and spent much of the time just talking about what had come out when and how it was different from this other toy and so on, and so it began to feel repetitive. The parts where she discussed *why* certain toys were the most popular are the parts I most enjoyed. The vintage pictures are nice to have, but they are also quite small and don't come with captions or credits, so at times I'm not clear on what I'm looking at or if it has any relation to the adjacent text. This is also the case with the previous Waggoner books, but it was far more irritating here given the large number of photos and all the toys mentioned.
